Holophonic Porno is a Fredericton, New Brunswick-based quartet born from a desire to create something different in a city known mainly for its blues and indie rock output, but looking to create change where expected-is-accepted can prove to be a challenging venture.
“I’d been doing my own thing musically for a while but wanted to find a heavier direction,” says vocalist Tonella Roy. Known for her unique delivery and undeniable stage presence, Roy began working with three-time EMCA nominated producer/guitarist James Gauthier to create something new and inspiring.
“We’d been writing music for a while before things really started to happen,” she said. “We went to see this band Shinny Toy Guns from Los Angles and drew a lot of inspiration from their set. They were so different from the usual bands that come through here. It helped us realize that it is possible to do our own thing.”
That inspiration fueled a writing frenzy that resulted in the bulk of material that makes up Holophonic Porno’s debut album [Obsession], released early in 2008. Delving into the darker side of human interaction, [Obsession] explores the true colours of mankind, exposing the battles that wage between the two sides of human consciousness; desire and deviance vs. conformity and complacence.
“Each song has an obsessive feel to it,” says Gauthier, “with themes ranging from religious fanaticism to the personal struggles anyone one may have. The songs are all about being trapped behind an obsession and not being able to break free from it.”
Juxtaposing the natural beauty and dynamic range of the female voice with the masculine aggression of heavy-edged music proved to be just the combination Gauthier and Roy had each been searching for. Combined with the structured and familiar rhythm of Electronica, Holophonic Porno’s sound is undeniably addictive.
