Example of my work:-
It’s a Blitzkrieg Bop – Yeah Yeah Yeahs Latest.
Let me start by setting everyone straight. I loved the last LP ‘Show Your Bones’.
Yes I know that lots of Yeah Yeah Yeahs critics and fans loved the debut ‘Fever To Tell’ and felt kind of let down with the follow up, but you are all wrong and the latest ‘It’s a Blitz’ strongly ties in with this much venerated album.
They may have replaced Nick Zinner’s guitar and effects with a load of old synths but the main themes and songs are not that different to the last two LPs.
Karen O in my eyes can do no wrong and continues to wear her heart on her misshaped sleeve with her most mature and well-crafted songs yet. This may sound a little iffy if you’re expecting some new radical approach but these tunes are the most radio friendly yet, in fact they are just great pop songs, though not in the vain of shit like Lady Ga Ga. Though like the no bra wearing and publicity chasing Ga Ga this LP is eighties sounding throughout but the distinct touches and Karen’s voice always stand out in the multitude of pretenders.
Unfortunately because these guys have been off the radar for the last three years lots of people have tried to plug the gap. Also with the eighties being the most furrowed field over that period to take all your ideas from the new sound just doesn’t quite make the impact if would have done say two years ago.
So the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have created not a so much a pastiche but a lost classic from the days following the death of disco and the on set of the neon decade.
Lets take a look at the tracks, firstly the opening ‘Zero’ is an instant return to form and is easily one of their best ever tracks they’ve recorded. The very first time you hear Karen’s breathless and restrained opening lines you know something epic is going to happen, while Ziner multi layers of synths and sounds add a buzzing dance music feel.
‘Heads Will Roll’ sounds like a seventies Sparks backing track but then struts itself onto the dance floor, this is another outstanding track and I can see this being the next single.
‘Skeletons’ has Karen O in her truly best balladeer mould in a tune that sounds like either an edgier experiment at advertising holidays in Ireland or a lost tune from Highlander. I could see the dry ice now seeping from my speakers, though this paints the song in a bad light its actually pretty good.
‘Dull Life’ is a return to the days of old, a return to ‘Fever To Tell’ though its much more restrained and tight. It really reminded me of the Noisettes, yet didn’t really impress me much. I’ve gone back to it quite a few times and feel it’s on here as a tempo change; it’s the weakest tune by a way.
Fortunately along comes a track like ‘Runaway’, a cliché but I will say it, this is the new ‘Maps’. ‘I want you to stay, I want you to be my prize’ great line, the words of a vulnerable Karen O. Another great line which I think I heard right is ‘Not so strong without these oblongs’, confused girl but don’t worry I will get her number and consol her.
This heartstrings inducing outpourings continue on ‘Hysteric’ with the furlong line ‘You suddenly complete me’, which is sung with such fragility that I’m starting to feel really sorry for her. The backing is smooth but moves about enough to keep you interested.
‘Dragon Queen’ and ‘Shame and Fortune’ bring up the rear and add the numbers up but don’t really stick out or in my view do this LP justice.
In short what we have here is a 10-track love album, much in the vain of ‘Show Your Bones’. A lots been said already about the disco vibes and that its produced by TV on the Radios David Sitek, who has something of the golden touch about him, but the crunch is that this LP is their most mature and complex work yet.
This doesn’t necessarily mean its their best or most cutting edge but its certainly their most radio friendly and accomplished.
Putting the guitars down for a while and using a more dancefloor inspired array of instruments has taken them somewhere a little different, Karen O again shows us just how great a leading lady she is and how she towers over the rest of the scene.
She’s looking to be appreciated and loved, failing that I’m sure she would appreciate you all buying this record.
