Homefires - the antidote to summer festivals - enters its fourth year the first weekend of June (2/3) with an event that is no bigger but hopefully just a little better than previously, as well as its first ever regional dates round the UK.
Something of a cherished secret to those in the know, Homefires has been showcasing the best of left-field "quiet" music over a weekend each summer in the comtemplative surroundings of Conway Hall in Holborn, since Joanna Newsom and Smog first got it together back in 2004.
Homefires tries to put a bunch of people you'd like to see on a bill with a load you've never heard of but will be glad you did!
London-based Homefires festival began in 2004, homed in Conway Hall in Holborn. Now preparing for its fourth year, in 2007 the success of the alternative folk festival has outgrown its old school oak surroundings and is about to embark on bigger but just as beautiful settings.
Voted as one of Time Out’s Events of the Year, the first Homefires weekend caught the mood of the moment perfectly with its blend of new and established singers and songwriters, giving many people their first sight of Joanna Newsom and Willy Mason, as well attracting big performers such as Gruff Rhys and Beth Orton to the small stage, and drawing absolutely spellbinding solo performances from (Smog)’s Bill Callahan and folk legend Bert Jansch.
In its second year the festival received critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian: “While Glastonbury scrabbles for an act with enough sequins to replace Kylie, Homefires’ curator, singer/songwriter Adem, has chosen his stars by musical ability alone.” 4/5
And this warm reception grew in 2006 when Vashti Bunyan, Grizzly Bear, Isobel Campbell and Final Fantasy were among the many to grace the Conway Hall stage.

hey whats up? i wanted to show you this site, it shows you if anyone has a crush on you and tells you who it is. i just tried it and i cant believe what it said.
It's all getting pretty exciting here - It's nice to be counting down days so far from christmas...
All the bands and performers will be getting ready to pack and choose their sets and I'm getting ready to be blown away and groups of people who became friends at previous homefires are deciding when and where to meet beforehand.
I'm overjoyed to be getting the chance to see some of these acts; the reason I started Homefires in the first place was to be able to watch artists that I loved but were not being put on/were playing inappropriate venues. What a treat to be able to ask your favourite bands to come and play in a beautiful space for you and some friends.
So tickets are flying out, we're starting to plan how the place will be laid out and I'm trying to decide what to play (every time I play I try to do something different - harp+glockenspiel, string quartet, two different full band line ups, solo...). All go at Homefires towers.
I look forward to seeing you there, new faces and hardcore veterans alike.
Much love,
Adem.
I love doing this festival. It's the work of a lot of people. Particular biggups go to John Best and the Bigdipper/bestest crew and Tom Baker at Eat Your Own Ears.
-Point of detail, at the first Homefires (2004), Alan Sparhawk was unable to make it at the last minute and heroically, Gruff Rhys stepped up and performed an outstanding solo set.
Looking forward to Homefires IV.
If anyone has a nice logo/icon/symbol to represent the festival, we'd love to see it...
