  • Bio

Home Fries is a fun, groovy funk band from San Francisco. Formed in mid-2007, the line-up consists of seven experienced, pro-level musicians from all over the bay area. Their mission statement is simple - “Funk up the crowd, but good”. The Home Fries repertoire consists of classic funk, Motown, and west coast jazz covers as well as some very dance-able, groovy originals. Drummer and vocalist, Justin Wooster started taking drum lessons at the ripe age of 8, studying under big band drummer, Art Flower for 6 years. “During grade school I would only listen to the Beatles, but when I hit Middle School, I discovered Stevie Wonder & started soaking up as much funk as I could. I love the primal instinct of laying down a solid funk beat - it’s as pure as rhythm gets!”, explains Justin. Justin has played in numerous bands, doing just about every type of American music there, is - metal, country, jazz & everything in between. But funk is what he truly loves most. Justin hooked up with bassist, Eric Goodwill through a craigslist post, sparking the nucleus of Home Fries. Eric lays down some of the funkiest bass lines you’ll ever hear. His playing embodies the dynamic and innovative styles of bass legends James Jamerson and Marcus Miller. Born in Montreal and first started playing bass in a blues / rock band with guitarist and Vince Marino who went on to play in Mahogany Rush. Played professionally for 8 years in the Montreal music scene laying down bass grooves almost every night for various singers and groups, mostly focusing on R&B, funk and dance music. , Vince Nabone, holds down the guitar duties, as well as the bulk of original compositions. His playing is always deftly executed yet supportive. His soloing style reminiscent of George Benson and Grant Green. Born and raised in SF, his influences are rock, jazz, blues, funk and latin jazz. Vince has played with countless bands in the Bay Area ranging from Country Joe Macdonald to Vince Lars from Tony Tony Tony. Vince also enjoys sitting in at any of the local blues jams around the Bay. ..boards is Vince Villanueva, a versatile keystone of the band. Vince also began playing a very young age and he knows how to get all the right vintage tones from his Yamaha Motif Keyboard. From squeeky clean Rhodes to blood-curdling B3. Vince also plays keys in a Brit-Rock band, Shepherd’s Pie, alongside Justin, who switches to guitar for this group. The icing on the Home Fries cake (or the ketchup) is the 3-piece horn section, led by Willie Seekamp on alto sax. Willie played with Justin way back in the early 90’s in The Corleones during the heyday of the SF funk-rock scene. Willie’s style is a culmination of his wildly varying tastes - from traditional jazz to avant-garde noise. In addition to owning and operating the best home recording studio in South San Francisco, Willie also plays guitar for college radio favs, The Graves Brothers Deluxe. The real flavor of the band comes from trumpeteer, Mike Pietre, aka, “Coffee Picasso”. Mike was born in New Orleans and raised in Port Arthur, Texas. Always pushing the creative bounds as a trumpet soloist, Mike is also an accomplished guitarist, singer and composer for the funk group, Bohemian Knuckleboogie, regulars at SF’s Boom-Boom Room. Mike also toured with Gloria Gaynor. Rounding out the horn section is Loy Coquilla on tenor sax. His warm, smooth tones & story-telling solos have raised the bar for the whole group. Together, the horn section makes up a skin-tight unit, pounding out heart-stopping harmonies and staccato lines as one. Home Fries is a large, but versatile funk group, able to suit the set to the occasion. They have played parties and restaurants as mellow instrumental backround jazz, or clubs with high-energy, in-your-face, get-up-and-dance greasy funk. Home Fries can do a concise hour-long set or play all night. Some staple gems of their live shows include Pick Up the Pieces, Love and Happiness, The Chicken, Chameleon, and Mr. Magic. Three of the tunes you're hearing hear are originals - "The Chicken" & "Love & Happiness" being the only covers.
