Ringgold High senior says school banned her gay date from prom; principal says homosexuality isn’t issue

Ashley Beaty Ashley Beaty, a senior at Ringgold High School, had planned to attend the school’s prom Saturday night. But she said she’s been prohibited from bringing her girlfriend, Nikki Heiskell, as her date because they’re gay.
Ringgold High principal Sharon Vaughn says that’s simply not the case. Homosexuality has nothing to do with it, she said.
Vaughn said Beaty can’t bring Heiskell because Heiskell left Ringgold High in poor standing.
If a student leaves the school in poor standing, the principal can prohibit the former student from attending a school-sanctioned event, Vaughn said.
Heiskell said she dropped out of Ringgold High this fall semester; otherwise it would be her senior prom as well. The couple have been dating since September 2006.
Beaty said she purchased prom tickets for herself and Heiskell at lunch Friday and then sat down for lunch. She said she was then approached by principal Vaughn and told she would have to return the tickets because it was not a “girl-girl” prom.
Beaty said Vaughn told her the prom was advertised as “boy-girl.” Beaty said she and Heiskell had not been previously denied entry to any school events.
Beaty said she returned the tickets and received a refund.
Vaughn said she encouraged Beaty to still attend the prom. She said she does not discourage homosexuals from attending prom, as long as they do not enter the prom as a couple because this can trigger unwanted media attention.
She added that prom attendees should dress gender-appropriate and that the Ringgold High prom is in fact a “boy-girl event at Ringgol
