   Hoosier Herpetological Society's Blurbs
About me:
Hoosier Herpetological Society
The Hoosier Herpetological Society formed in late 1988 (my age reflects the Society's age) and is going strong today. It was formed back when there was little known of herpetology. The Internet had not begun to take off, and there were few books and no magazines as there are today. Most information on reptiles and amphibians was gathered by fellow members and contributing writers of the newsletter. Now information on biology, conservation and captive care of reptiles and amphibians is widespread and easily obtained. Local societies such as the H.H.S. are still very much a part of the herpetological community. Herp societies are contributing to captive bred animals and the conservation and education of amphibians and reptiles. Members enjoy monthly presentations by experts locally, regionally and beyond. Members in the past have enjoyed speakers such as: Dr. Brady Barr, Jim Harrison. Other guest speakers include researchers, biologists, naturalists, and zoo personnel. The H.H.S. is proud of its monthly newsletter, The Monitor, which features original articles and stories of herps and herping. It also features important dates and classified ads. Members also enjoy field trips to areas where these amazing animals survive in the wild. They may see, capture, and photograph herps in the natural state. In 1994, the H.H.S.(in cooperation with the D.N.R.), captured and relocated Endangered Kirtland’s snakes to a new location in hopes to save the animal. The original habitat was to be destroyed to make way for an industrial park. Twelve years later, Kirtland’s snakes have recently been observed at the new relocation site! Educational displays and exhibits are another big part of herp societies. The H.H.S. and its members present several of these shows throughout the state. Members are encouraged to display and answer questions concerning their animals and the society. An Annual photography contest, Christmas party and our show and tell program are regular events that our members look forward to throughout the year.

The Hoosier Herpetological Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education of its membership and the conservation of all reptiles and amphibians.

General monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month. Meetings are held at 7:30 pm at Butler University, Gallahue Hall, Room 105 or 108. Meetings are open to all interested individuals, and animals are welcome. No venomous animals are allowed at the General Meetings
