About me:
The Hampi Children’s Trust ( HCT ) is a non-profitmaking
organisation , based in the ancient historic town of Hampi
( aka Vijayanagara – “ City of Victory ” ) ,
the fabled capital of the Vijayanagara
Empire , in the state of Karnataka , India. We have
applied for Public Charitable Trust status under
Indian law ( having instucted Mr Mohan , a lawyer in
Hospet ) and have also sent the appropriate
registration forms to the Charity Commission in the
UK , for formal registation as a Charity.

The aim of the Trust is to promote + improve the
educational prospects of those young children ( aged 4 to
16 years ) living in Hampi Bazaar who currently do
not receive an education , primarily because their
parents do not allow them to attend school , pefering
instead to send them out begging for money
from the many Westerners who visit the
magnificent Hampi site during the tourist season .
Without a formal education , the prospects for these
children is bleak .

The idea for the Hampi Children’s Trust came about in
November 2006 when Tim Brown – from England – and Kali
Das – born + raised in Hampi – met once again in
Hampi , exactly 10 years since their first meeting in
November 1996 , when Kali , as a 15 year old
guide , showed Tim around the Hampi site for 2 days . Both
Tim + Kali love Hampi and its’ unique , magical
atmosphere , and yet were saddened and troubled by the
degree of poverty “ hidden ” beneath Hampi’s
glorious surface , + especially by the number of often
very young children who weren’t attending school ,
being sent out onto the main street to beg for rupees
instead .

The HCT’s initial aims are modest , with the first project
( funded by Tim + Kali themselves ) beginning
in April 2007 . We are employing a cook and
buying food ingredients , in order to provide an
initial group of 10 children with 3 meals a day , 7
days a week , providing school uniforms + essential
materials, and enrolling them at the small private
school at the far end of Hampi Bazaar main street . We
are also developing an ‘out-of-school-hours’ programme
for this group of children , in order to try + give
them a structure to their week + to help develop
and improve their basic essential ‘ life-
skills ’.

We hope to expand this scheme in the coming months to
include more children ( .. there are many more than 10
children in need .. ! ) ; this is , obviously ,
dependent upon the HCT receiving some income , in the
form of voluntary donations , from those people – both
locals and foreign tourists + travellers – who are
sympathetic to , and supportive of , our aims +
objectives . It is equally important for us to find
some help in developing + delivering the
evenings/weekends support stucture for the children –
Kali can’t do everything himself .. !!

Mr Mohan , a lawyer based in Hospet ( the local town ,
11km from Hampi ) , is currently drawing up the
necessary paperwork required to register the HCT as a
legal Public Charitable Trust under Indian law : we
have received agreement from 7 other respectable local
individuals willing to serve as official Trustees (
Indian law requires a minimum of 9 Trustees for a
Public Charitable Trust ) .
