About me: In 2004 my son Rowan was diagnosed with Autism. I found my way into his world through a horse - Betsy. This summer, 2007, Rowan and I will journey across Mongolia, the land of the horse, raising awareness for autism, making a movie and raising funds to put in a dedicated Autism Resource Center in Austin Texas, where autism rates have spiked by 600% in the past 15 years. We will ride from healer to healer, staying with traditional shamans, who will work on Rowan, journeying across the Great Steppe up to where Siberia kisses the north of Mongolia at Lake Hovsgvol - the land of the reindeer herders. An adventure that never would have come to me, had Rowan not been diagnosed with Autism. Please click on the movie link to help us.
Rupert Isaacson, a journalist for both the US and UK press, spent several years in the Kalahari, following the successful land claim of South Africa's Xhomani San Bushmen, which set the legal precedent from which the Central Kalahari Game Reserve claim has been launched. His book about those experiences - The Healing Land, the Bushmen and the Kalahari - was published in 2003 by Grove Atlantic New York, and by Harper Collins in the UK , and is now in paperback in both countries. In addition Isaacson has published and continues to publish numerous newspaper and magazine articles about the plight of the San Bushmen. His media connections ensured attention for the San Bushmen speakers when they came to the USA in fall 2004, and his public speaking record secured the support of various institutions and museums such as National Geographic and the American Museum of Natural History.
Isaacson is the author of six guidebooks: the Cadogan guides to South Africa , Zimbabwe, Botswana & Namibia ,South India and Goa. . He also produced two guides to adventure sports - one on Southern Africa (Southern Africa on the Wild Side , Cadogan), and one on the UK (Action Guide to Britian , Harvill Press). He writes regularly for Conde Nast Traveler, Food & Travel, the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Independent on Sunday and Esquire - as well as American publications such as National Geographic Traveler and Outside.
