Chicago Tribune – The songs from Horse In The Sea’s new album, I Order The Sun To Shine On Everyone are terribly pretty, with foundations built around vocal harmonies. Joel Janis has a lifting voice that curls the ends of his phrases into a soft, strange falsetto. He sounds fey and noble, a bit of a cold remove that lends a sardonic edge to his clever lyricism.
Chicago Reader – You can hear these locals’ folk-rock background in the strength of their melodies, but their self-released debut, I Order The Sun To Shine On Everyone, has decidedly cosmopolitan ambitions. With three singers and a cinematic sense of tension and climax, the group is right at home with the lush layered approach taken by producer/member Kyle Andrews.
Timeout Chicago - The folk outfit released its debut I Order The Sun To Shine On Everyone last year to auspicious responses. At times wistful and sunny, these locals are charmingly straightforward in their approach.
Horse In The Sea is the ancient story of a man at war with himself. With squinted, strained eyes he envisions a victory, but the opposite direction shows an inevitable defeat. Developed as a concept, the band played its initial show on the eve of 2007. Horse In The Sea features the introspective songwriting of founding member Joel Janis and the production of indie-pop wizard Kyle Andrews. Tess Haskins, Joe Darnaby, Justin Ferwerda, and Ray Klemchuk round out the current Horse lineup. Their music, built around radiant harmonies and an electric folk foundation, maintains the identity of the records that make this sound possible. The debut album, “I Order The Sun To Shine On Everyone” was released on November 23, 2007 to a packed crowd at Chicago's Schubas Tavern. Also, the band will release a song on Thy Old Murkville Forest, featuring such artists as Denison Witmer, Anathallo, and Page France. They have been promoting these releases in most American markets including New York, Minneapolis, Chicago, Nashvile, and Philadelphia. Stayed tuned for many more shows in 2008.
seriously. let us dance during your show in a slightly more organized than your general rocking-out-while- your-favorite-Horse-In-The-Sea-song- is-playing kind of way.
Hello there! January & I truly enjoyed your rockin' concert at Double Door recently. We were soo happy we were able to make it! Please keep us posted on if you will be heading to LA. You are the best.
It was so exciting to hear that we will be playing some shows together soon. We were big fans prior to connecting. Thanks for the great songs. Don't be surprised if when we play together Scatteredtrees does an entire set of Horse In The Sea covers.
Absolutely on playing a show with you guys in Portland. Early next year meaning upcoming wintertime, I assume? Let me know how your tour out west comes together. Have a great several months in the meantime. Cheers.
Just wanted to let you know that I have been enjoying your songs immensely, and I have put you up on my page as a top friend. I know, are we moving too fast? Thanks for the great music.
Yeah, but YOUR profile of K's flyer is way more "well hung." SHOW OFF. Hmm..as far as doing a show here, you can start by playing the 40th floor of an apartment building (hope you liked Poltergeist 3.) It will keep you safe from the "Not So Latin" Kings affiliated gang that is Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and the Wahlbergs.
