Horse's Mouth was formed in May 2008 when Brooklyn-native songwriter Tavo Carbone [voice, guitar] recruited longtime collaborators J.J. Beck [drums, glockenspiel, keys], Matt Scott [bass, voice], Heather Sommerlad [violin, voice] and Michael Chinworth [keys, voice, accordion].
Carbone, Beck and Chinworth began collaborating around 2005 in Bennington VT, performing with Carbone in revolving casts of backing bands to his songs. The songwriter recorded and touring under his namesake for a while, releasing the 2007 album "2/3 Skeleton"- 14 songs combining the textures of pump organ, glockenspiel, ukulele, percussion and cello- "'2/3 Skeleton' demonstrates Carbone's ability to abandon the self absorbent path of the typical singer/songwriter and, like Leonard Cohen or Bill Callahan, take his listeners to another place altogether allowing them to interpret the music in away that is personally relevant to each individual" - Bart Ford, Under the Mooch Records [Tulsa, OK]. In Jan 2008, Carbone also released the CD/DVD "Forward"- a live album, featuring an orchestra of seventeen. Carbone toured both releases, on and off for a year and a half, before finally landing back home in Brooklyn where he, Beck, Scott, Sommerlad and Chinworth would form Horse's Mouth.
Following a July '09 residency at Pete's Candy Store, the band released their first EP, 'In the woods' this fall. Horse's Mouth performs regularly in and outside of Brooklyn- and is currently focusing on the completion of their full-length debut, due out March '10.
