O Hot Clube de Portugal é o mais antigo clube de jazz em Portugal, desenvolvendo ininterruptamente a sua actividade desde 1948. Luís Villas-Boas foi o seu sócio fundador e estará sempre ligado à história do Hot Clube e do jazz em Portugal. Actualmente, a direcção do HCP está a cargo do Eng.º Bernardo Martins Moreira.
Villas-Boas iniciou a divulgação da música Jazz, nos finais de 1945, aos microfones da rádio, no programa “Hot Club”, na mesma altura em que foi lançada a ideia de se constituir uma Associação com a finalidade de divulgar esta expressão musical.
Com programação de concertos quase diária (realizada por Luís Hilário), passaram e continuam a passar, pela pequena cave da Praça da Alegria, nomes importantes do jazz nacional e internacional.
Prestes a completar o seu 60º aniversário (a 19 Março de 2008), o Hot Clube de Portugal, consolidou o seu papel na sociedade portuguesa, como uma instituição cultural reconhecida e respeitada. Apesar das suas limitações financeiras, logísticas e humanas, continua a assumir o importante papel, que teve e continua a ter na vida cultural lisboeta, apostando na divulgação, ensino e afirmação do Jazz em Portugal.
Também ligadas ao HCP:
* Escola de Jazz Luís Villas-Boas, é membro fundador da International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ), importante organização internacional que conta com as mais prestigiadas instituições de ensino de jazz (New School University de Nova Iorque, Berklee College of Music de Boston, Royal Academy de Londres, Conservatório de Paris, etc.), e situa-se na Travessa da Galé, 36, 1º andar do edifício da Standard Eléctrica. O curso tem a duração de 5 anos, e está dividido em 2 níveis: Nível Básico (3 anos), e Nível Avançado (2 anos). Existe também um Nível de Iniciação para Instrumento. Existem disciplinas obrigatórias e disciplinas opcionais. A cada disciplina está associado um número de créditos. A funcionar desde o início dos anos 80, foi nesta escola que se formou a maioria dos jovens músicos de jazz portugueses. Luiz Villas-Boas was its founding member and will always be linked to the history of the Club and to jazz in Portugal. Luiz started publicising jazz towards the end of 1945 on the radio in the programme “Hot Club”, at the time when the idea of establishing an association to promote jazz was launched in order to divulge this musical expression.
Ever since then and in almost daily programmes very important national and international musicians have performed and continue to perform in the small basement of number 39, Praça da Alegria, in Lisbon. For almost 60 years (since 19th March, 1948) Hot Club de Portugal has consolidated its role as a recognized and respected cultural institution in the Portuguese society. Despite some financial, logistic and staff limitations, the Club retains its important role, both in the past and in today’s cultural life in Lisbon, by investing in publicising, teaching jazz and setting it on a steady footing in Portugal. It is also connected to:
* Escola de Jazz Luiz Villas-Boas, a founding member of the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ), an international organization which includes some of the most prestigious institutions teaching jazz. The school is located at Travessa da Galé, 36,1st floor (close to the Lisbon Congress Center). The course takes 5 years and is divided into 2 levels: Basic (3 years) and Advanced (2 years). Beginners’ lessons are also available. There are mandatory and optional subjects to study. The school has been functioning since the beginning of the 80’s and it was here that many of today’s Portuguese jazz musicians studied. In order to study a membership is required.

** Big Band HCP – the first Portuguese big band, exclusively dedicated to jazz and performing regularity, was formed in 1990 in order to fill a gap in training jazz musicians.

Está agendada uma exposição com objectos que ilustrem a sua história, e que mais tarde poderão ser inseridos no projecto da Casa do Jazz. Com o objectivo de contribuir para tal núcleo museológico, e mais concretamente para esta exposição, solicitamos que quem tiver peças sobre a história do Jazz em Portugal entre em contacto com o HCP, na sede ou na escola. Essas peças podem ser iconográficas, audio-visuais ou de outro tipo, e podem ser doadas ou simplesmente cedidas para as Comemorações. O HCP agradece!”
