Reviews:
Jesus, these girl’s are pussy supreme, couldn't
they do a cover with more photos?. At first glance it just looks like
three strippers formed a band (and not burned-out over 40 strippers, either). I
dunno, ever since the Runaways did a video and album cover in lingere back in
the '70s, girl bands have always been close to my heart. This CD is trashy punk
rock 'n' roll, fast and medium-paced; the band lock into the medium-paced trash
pretty good, and spill beer all over the place on the fast tracks. It's the
third album for these mid-westerners and the 13 tracks clock in at just under 27
minutes. My favourites are songs like "I’m Hooked" and "He Likes Em Dead". The
lyrics are humourous, the attitude erect, the nipples hard and the juice is
flowing. This CD just makes me wanna see 'em live. I think that's where they
would be best experienced for a maxiumum good time.

Hot Damn is this band full of hot chicks
from Indiana who play sleazy, stripped-down junk-billy and hi-speed trash n’
roll, in see-through underwear. And they’ve been doing it for years - I have
their old records, and they are actual RECORDS, if you dig me. The fact that Hot
Damn was not thee biggest band on the planet 7-8 years ago is truly beyond me,
man. A chick who looks like a porn star and plays guitar like Johnny Thunders on
crack singing a song called "My Panties Are Too Tight" is easily one of the best
ideas rock n roll ever had. But hey, they did have a cult following of pervs,
freaks and sleazaholics, and it was a sad day for all of 'em when HD dropped out
of sight somewhere around '98. Where did they go? What did they do? Well, that’s
not entirely our business, but for mythology's sake, let's chalk it up to 6
years of boozing and whoring. And anyway, they're back, as loud, loose, and
slutty as ever, so dry your eyes and grab your ankles."The Girl Can't Help It"
(which, coincidentally, opens with a cover of… "The Girl Can't Help It") picks
up right where their last record, 1997's "Big Fat Lover" left off, with raw,
strangled guitar lines from Mizz Kristina and Mizz Amina that are so primitive
they make the Chickenhawks sound like Rush, and a bratty punk-bitch yelp from
lead-blondestress Zebra. Oh, and some blurting saxes. And songs that are mostly
about necrophilia. And panties. Yeah, I understand that sometimes Hot Damn sound
like teenage speedfreaks trying to play The Stooges at Ramones speed, but that
is entirely what makes ‘em so good - it’s called "wild abandon", and seriously,
it used to be applauded in rock n' roll. All I can tell you is that not only
will "The Girl Can’t Help It" have you thrashing around the room like a punked-up
spastic, it'll keep yr boner popping the whole time. And that ain’t a bad, for a
few measly bucks. Hot Damn, indeed.

Three lingerie-clad axe-slingin babes
swinging through tunes like “Sex Zombie,” “She’s A Devil,” and “Fuck Monster”?
Shit man, sign me up! (That’s not to mention their song about necrophiliacs, “He
Likes ‘Em Dead,” or the fact that the band even throws in covers of “Short
Shorts” and “The Girl Can’t Help It.”) The occasional saxophone adds just the
right amount of extra grind to the bomp of this sultry garage party, and as nice
‘n naughty as it is you can bet Hot Damn puts on a luciously live show. If
you’re a fan of female-led punk rock with multiple vocals along the lines of the
mighty Loudmouths, you’re gonna dig Hot Damn for sure.

One of
the most frustrating things about being a music fan is when you discover a
killer band only for them to drop off the face of the earth, never to be heard
from again. Sometimes, such a band
will
eventually resurface, often to mixed results.
After a six year gap,
Hot Damn
are back with a new effort in
The Girl
Can't Help It.
Thankfully, the results are more convincing than not.
Hot Damn's
souped up brand of punk rock n' roll comes off like the
440's
would if they were houseband at a sex party in hell, instead of a hot rod rally.
This is pretty unrelenting stuff, to say the least--13 songs in about 27 and a
half minutes.
The Girl Can't Help It
is also brimming with campiness, kind of like if the blackened voodoo energy of
prime
Cramps
was in a
blender with the sex starved swagger of the
Demolition Doll Rods.
It fits the music to a tee, making this band and album the total package.
As fast as it breezes by,
The Girl
Can't Help It
manages to have some memorable moments from the songwriting perspective.
"I'm Hooked"
proves to be the most furious of the batch, cultivating a bit of
Funhouse-era
Stooges
vibe.
"Can't Put It Away"
rocks hardest and lingers most, thanks to its catchy hook. The slower temoped
"She's A Devil"
sees
Hot Damn
at their sexiest, while the slide guitar lead on the brilliantly titled
"No Car, No Phone, No Life"
totally kills. Sax injected covers of
"The Girl
Can't Help It"
and
"Short Shorts"
bookend the whole shebang, keeping this album tied up in a neat little bow.
Fans of any the forementioned bands or styles should be advised to give
The Girl Can't Help It
a spin.
Hot Damn
are able to keep the energy level up and sustained here about as well as one
could hope for. Worth the wait? You bet.
