Deliberately oldschool and proto-style bands walk an incredibly fine line between tribute, originality, and moronic cliché, and it wouldn't be unfair to characterize this sort of thing as a tightrope walk of intentions. Hot Graves manages to succeed by ignoring the rope all together and just doing whatever the hell it wants; there's a certain old Beherit style don't-give-a-fuck attitude at work here, which is easy to imitate but hard to make convincing. Like most bands that succeed with it, Hot Graves works because they COULD give a shit but choose not to, given the quality of their music.
There's a high level of punk and oldschool hardcore influence in this music (and plenty of d-beats, as one would expect) which forms a ground level of musical ideas that the metal elements build upon. While this is primarily black/thrash based, the small notes of death and crust add a surprisingly deep layer of creativity to the music, stopping it from being just a run-of-the-mill retro band and elevating it above most of its contemporaries...
Hot Graves takes very typical musical ideas and reconfigures them just enough to be extremely compelling. This is certainly not for people who want clean and friendly music, but for those who want a pure discharge of oldschool black/thrash, this is a great piece from one of the first bands in this style I've heard recently with any promise."
