The Republic of Maldives is a group of coral islands in the Indian Ocean to the west of India and Sri Lanka on the equator.
Any Maldivian will tell you that the torture or killing of inmates by the NSS(acting under their President's orders)has long been part of the country's penal system, but this time the fear tactics used to make people keep their mouths shut did not silence them. With hidden cell phones some inmates were able to contact people in th country's capital island, Male', and alert them to what had happened. The parents of the dead became aware of the NSS's intention to make their sons "disappear" and demanded their bodies. In the end, two of the murdered teenaged boys were exposed in a funeral room in Male' for the public to see.

"Fifteen people came to get me. I was sleeping and they came in four vehicles. They took me to the police headquarters near the harbour, kept me there sitting on a chair for ten hours...I was handcuffed and blindfolded.
The political motivation behind her arrest is due to the fact that her father is a Maldivian politician. She is being detained at the prison where she is vulerable to violence by guards and NSS officials. She faces health risks because of unsanitary conditions, water and food contamination, and the withholding of her blood sugar medication. ALL THIS AS SHE SERVES HER 10 YEAR SENTENCE FOR BEING IN A PROTEST.
