Roula,
Comment on : Brokeback Mountain
Today I listened to your show as usual and was stunned to hear the amount of intolerance being blasted over the airwaves from some of your fellow castmates. In your voice I did hear more compassion on the topic but the damage had already been done. Whether I agree with the Teacher's choice of movie ( Brokeback Mountain ) to be shown in the classroom or not is irrelevant. I don't think you ever got around to finding out "WHY" the Teacher showed this movie or not. I believe that the topic was very relevant if only to teach tolerance to the students. At that age children are impressionable and being exposed to the topic of Gay life and it's challenges has a place in our schools. I myself did not particularly like the film but I applauded the topic and the amount of exposure it has given to the Gay Community especially during the time the film was depicted.
Hate Crimes in this Counrty are on the rise again and by speaking to the masses the way you guys did today will most definately spur more grief and possible anger towards the Gay Community when it had nothing to do with this choice. I agree that everyone should have the right to speak their mind and voice their opinions but when it is done over the airwaves where you reach as many people as your show does and there is not an equal balance then you are causing irrevocable damage.
Even after the huge amount of support the Community received in the wake of Matthew Shepard's terrible death we are still, especially in this Country, living with ignorant and intolerant people on race, religion and sexual orientation. I applaud this Teacher and any educator that tries to bring us closer to a more tolerant soc
