Utah Phillips is very, very ill. He can no longer perform and urgently needs financial help. He has given so much to the One Big Union and progressive people everywhere. Now is the time to show him what we learned from him and to put into practice the solidarity he taught us.

I.W.W. Musician, Singer, Poet, Writer, and, most of all Organizer - Utah Phillips has spent his life uplifting the spirits of all struggling against the bosses to build a better world. At all his concerts he had it stipulated that wobblies would be present to fundraise and organize.

He has been the voice for "...all those thousands of unnamed wobblies buried in unmarked graves throughout the west." Don't let that voice go unanswered.

Cards, messages and money can be sent to:

When the people of Oaxaca decided they'd had enough of bad government, they didn't take their story to the media... They TOOK the media

In the summer of 2006, a broad-based, non-violent, popular uprising exploded in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Some compared it to the Paris Commune, while others called it the first Latin American revolution of the 21st century.

But it was the people’s use of the media that truly made history in Oaxaca. A 90-minute documentary, A Little Bit of So Much Truth captures the unprecedented media phenomenon that emerged when tens of thousands of school teachers, housewives, indigenous communities, health workers, farmers, and students took 14 radio stations and one TV station into their own hands, using them to organize, mobilize, and ultimately defend their grassroots struggle for social, cultural, and economic justice.

"Beautiful, powerful, dramatic...magnificent...provides a remarkably deep and penetrating look into the people who made up the movement. Everyone interested in Mexico, in teachers and education, in workers' movements, in indigenous people, in the state of our world and the struggle for social justice should see the video."
Mexican Labor News and Analysis

The screening is one in an ongoing series of progressive films presented by Houston Independent Media Center on a monthly basis, designed to raise awareness on a variety of important social and political issues. The Houston Independent Media Center is a community-based organization committed to using media productio

"The only dream worth having is to dream that you will live while you are alive, and die only when you are dead. To love, to be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and vulgar disparity of the life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget." - Arundhati Roy

The Hispanic Heritage Society of Texas is comprised of young men and women of Hispanic background as well as students with an interest in Hispanic cultures. Our mission is to serve as a support group for students of Latin American or Spanish descent, as well as educate communities in Texas about Hispanic cultures and issues, in both Latino countries and in the United States. It is our hope that by sharing our cultures and issues with the community, our efforts will break old stereotypes of the Hispanic world and contribute to a greater understanding between the members of our growing multi-cultural state.
