Howard Theatre Restoration, Inc. (HTR), a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is leading a collaborative effort with the District of Columbia and other private entities to bring the life, the music, and the people back to the Howard Theatre. The reconstruction effort will be managed by The Howard Theatre Development Group, LLC, (HTDG), made up of Ellis Development Group and Four Points, LLC., while architects Martinez & Johnson, recognized leaders in the application of architectural preservation standards and procedures, will head the design effort.
The mission of HTR is to raise funds to revitalize, preserve and protect the historic Howard Theatre in Washington, DC.
Together with the City, HTR and its partners will reestablish the historic U Street/Shaw and LeDroit Park neighborhood as an art and entertainment destination where residents can live, work and play. As part of their corporate commitment to the neighborhood, Radio-One, the nation's premier African-American media company, is set to move their headquarters on the same square block as the Howard Theatre. The Howard Theatre will be the crown jewel of the arts district development.
The District of Columbia has made a generous financial commitment to the Howard Theatre. In return, HTR must raise the balance of the funds to underwrite the construction cost, furnishings, equipment, and educational programs.
Congratulations! The Howard is where I saw Smokey and the Miracles, Gladys and the Pips, the Monitors, and Tami Terrell for $2. 50! It helped shape my musical career!
