I work as a commercial film maker, director / producer (producing corporate work and some TV commercials), however this space is about my personal work and I will be posting various short films and clips from larger projects. Feedback welcome!
I work mainly on DV for immediacy and cost .. chopping in FCP.
Music .. I play saxophone, mainly tenor these days and some organ / keys .. still struggling with that left hand. Main time served is with prog/jazz/noise/experimentalists Biting Tongues, (check our space for more info) and on to BTAL (Biting Tongues Arts Lab) performances of Dr X with Ken and Graham.
I have practiced Taiji (tai chi) for about 15 years, Chen style being the main focus for the last 10. I have studied with 3 of the 4 Chen Buddha's warriors: Chen Xiaowang, Chen Zhenglei and Zhu Tincai.
My teacher is Master Liu Yong based in Lianyungang China.
In Sept 2006, I made another trip to China to train with him. The visit coincided with the 20th anniversary celebration of the opening of his school. He gave a comprehensive demonstration of various forms and techniques,
an excellent rocking display showing his creative forward thinking.
I also have tremendous respect for Master Zhu Tincai and have enjoyed training with him on his trips to the UK. Other martial arts experience includes several years Wing Chun Kung Fu with Master Samuel Kwok. Danny Connor was a close friend (see Dust blog) and spending time with him exposed me to many different martial arts and artists, most memorable being Grandmaster Yip Chun.
Who I'd like to meet: Extract from 'I Wish I Could Totally Self Destruct'.
When writer Martin Molloy and I embarked on this film project, Martin offered various pieces of writing: some excerpts from work in progress and some autobiographical notes.
We set up a camera, engaged Jex as technical facilitator and I ‘interviewed’ Molloy using his notes as prompts. The resulting core of the film is a dark comedy performance, where Martin gives a disturbed account of his early life and describes his difficulty finding words to express his ideas.
The film also includes some passages from his forthcoming novel Zero, articulate descriptions of human experience, Molloy physically acting out the anguish of their creation.
So here we have a writer who despairs of his inability to write.
And some of his writing.
Paradox? Fine.
The Wong One's Gone.
With Ed Barton. Edward displaying his usual inability to distinguish between the truth and what he wants, uses his mother as his dog. Howard points the camera and shakes his head.
Lonely Creatures : Abducido. In collaboration with Ken Hollings. Each film in the Lonely Creatures series is made without actors, with narrative content derived from the gaps that exist between the spoken word, the moving image and the soundtrack. None of the films involve dialogue in any form, onscreen action is kept to an absolute bare minimum, and often it is up to the viewer to make sense of what is going on. Each addition to the series takes us a little closer to an understanding of isolation, offering glimpses of private worlds that never quite hold together.
That Was Now (2002). Originally running at 13 mins, this is a brutally hacked down version of my first excursion into improvisation, working with non-actors.
This was a very creative time. The project brought together some inventive, inspiring people unafraid to take risks.
The result - a surreal exploration of marketing and advertising.
The project was always about experimentation and process, consequently the results are narratively very loose.
