Kristen J. Tsetsi, award-winning author of the novel Homefront, has written a short, little book for child-free (by choice) women that, perhaps for the first time, doesn't analyze their choice, but celebrates it.

Originally a series of blog posts, How to (not) Have Children received a number of reader comments. Most were in support of the work; a few were not.

"Is this your way of justifying, to yourself, why you don't want children?" was a comment left by one anonymous reader. It is for the women who have fielded similar questions that How to (not) Have Children was written.

Kristen J. Tsetsi is the author of the intimate and highly praised war novel Homefront, as well as several short stories, articles, and essays. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Links to her published pieces can be found at her website: kristentsetsi.com.

Huzzah for being child-free: Because the only thing I want to nurse at 8 am is a hangover!

thanks for the add, I dont want to have children of my own because of the overpopulation of our planet. adoption is something Ive always wanted, but def something Ive gotten alot heat for.
for real though, orphanages are overflowing, why would I need to reproduce more children?

And thanks for the add! I saw your Facebook page on one of the childfree groups that I'm in. I'm childfree myself, and it's always good to see people who have that in common, as well as books about it. I can't ever imagine having children myself, even though people tell me that I'm young and I'll come around when I'm older. I see having children as a choice, no more, no less. Part of why I'm childfree is keeping my freedom - I'm a college student, and freedom is essential! Also, from babysitting my young siblings doesn't make me change my mind - it just reinforces why I don't want to have children.
I'm looking forward to checking out your new book - keep up the good work!

I too have been shunned for my choice not to have kids. It's my body, and I always reply with, "If you want me to have kids so badly, why don't you have them for me?" I've been called everything from "selfish" to "a soon-to-be old lady living alone with cats".
I've even had someone so adamant on convincing me that they tried the "If nothing else, it's good to have someone to take care of you in old-age" angle! Thanks for the Add!

Thank you for the request!! I am always glad to be a part of something that encourages child-free happiness. I am 100% able to have children and love children very much. I support any family that chooses to welcome children into the world....however....I am a huge advocate of being childless by choice. I just wish others would be more supportive. When did having a child become some kind of female requirement? I was actually told once that not having children makes one less of a woman. How absurd.

Thanks for the add. I thought parenthood was supposed to be a CHOICE.
Since when in this modern society did it become a "requirement?"

Thanks for the add. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they'll need inspiration too. An echo of an echo of Buddha or Jesus, encrusted in ritual, loses context & content. Still, we write what we can. Try to hear the deeper questions. ¶ This world's diverse evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — in market, government, & elsewhere — believe we're all separate, motivated only by greed. They want us to share that belief, for they use it to justify themselves, to keep us apart, to control politics & the economy, perpetuating war, poverty, ecocide. Their power comes not so much from cabals as from ubiquitous propaganda, implicit in their framing of the news. ¶ But they're mistaken about our motives. You & I have found empathy inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, even the tank drivers, if only we can wake them, for we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. The bureacracy of brutality cannot stand if we open the eyes of its workers. ¶ What is human nature? Our task is not just to describe what we see, but to choose what we strive to become. The ideological battle between love & fear shapes the world, & its outcome is not yet written. Watching, voting, shopping are not enough. If you haven't already, join the global conversation, in whatever way feels right for you. Merge the revolutions of enlightenment & class struggle. Worldwide understanding has no precedent; we must discover & erase its rules en route. Make love not war is as serious as Orwell & as light as "Chocolat." More details in my blogs. ¶ For a start, just talk with people — that may not sound like much, but really it's huge. Spread the word. Each of us knows only part of the song, but keep singing, hoping, resisting, questioning. Hand in hand, we may heal this world.
