There are other code sets you may come across. One that's used primarly on IBM mainframes is EBCDIC (Extended Binary Coded Data Interchange Code). I think the person(s) who came up with that acronym went to the Redundancy School of Redundancy! The EBCDIC code set uses a different combination of 8 bits to represent various characters.
