Queen Josephine Rocks!
If there were ever to be a Disco Queen’s New Years Honours List dj Queen Josephine would top it. 2008 saw proof of this when she won Best Female Dj at GScene’s Golden Handbag Awards. There wasn’t an unclapping hand in the building as Brighton’s favourite majesty collected her award and deservedly so. Queen Josephine has to be one of the hardest working dj’s around.
Her djing career started when she abandoned the role of dj widow and secured a residency at Brighton’s infamous Zanzibar. Soon a slot at the Candy Bar beckoned and her headline sets at Candy’s Pussy Parties and at Brighton Pride ensured this queen was duly worship. Her hands in the air commercial dance mixed with a dash of credible and yet so sweet soulful house keeps dance floor’s seduced wherever she plays be it at Majesty, Secret Disco, Mardi Gras @ Charles St Club, Sugar, Purple In The Park, Work! @ Heaven, The Pussycat Club @ Digital, Mad Cow, Dining Dykes, Anthem or Koochie.
Off the decks Queen Josephine has also delivered; alongside Kate Wildblood for the compilations ‘Secret Disco’ and ‘Private Party II’ or courtesy of her vocal prowess on Goloka’s ‘Afterglow’. But it’s with Aeon that Queenie reigns with style. A style varied but always quality be it the bass heavy filth of Rebel, the old skool and disco tinged delights of Wild Fruit or her sunset sessions at Sunday Sundae.
Asked why she loves Wild Fruit so Queen Jo was more forthcoming than a corgi at teatime saying, “Where do you start? Wild Fruit, Rebel, Sunday Sundae? They are quite simply the best parties in town with fabulous residents, wonderful special guests and such a marvelously up for it crowd.” For Wild Fruit’s monarch it’s always about the “lovely, lovely clubbers and their positive attitudes.”
She may describe herself as “camp as tits” and think we see her as a “kind old queen” but the truth is so much more regal than that. This Queen Josephine rules. On the dancefloors she plays to and the clubbers who love her. Long may she rule, as she puts, “all fruity like”.
