Now there is a global hip-hop, global rhythm, global riddim, global reggae, global dub rock trend, etc. It is great to see other labels, artists, promoters, radio programs and journalists adopting the "Global Rock Revolution" from New York City to Ventura, California and back to Wilmington, North Carolina. And it is sweeeeet to see f@kers who critisized now biting. It is all great. D.I.A. invented "Global Rock" and the "mashup" vibe for the world. NOW HEAR DIS RUDIES & PUNKS. HR without a doubt is one of the greatest artists on the Third Rock From The Sun. He ranks in the same category as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley and Jim Morrison. On a dime, dude can scream like a banshee as well as croon like Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra with the quickness. Absolutely no other artist comes close. Undisputed -- early Bad Brains with HR (via their formative gritty diy-type recordings) helped set trends for today's alternative muzik some 25+ years later. You pick the bands -- Red Hot Chili Peppers, P.O.D., 311, etc., they have been fucking influenced. And respectfully, some forever pay homage to the Rastacore krew and HR. Others try to keep them a secret. But the word is out. Currently youths on sk8boards think it is kool to mention Bad Brains. All good! Bad Brains is the BEST rock or global rock band every! Still will be light-years ahead 5000 years down the road. Bad Brains is on of the few Big Bang Theories in muzik. Cudd have been the biggest DIY krew. Neva needed big-name associates or a "corporate machine" for advancement. The underground keeps Bad Brains alive. Well that is another story...
Outside of Bad Brains, HR is equally revered by a few generations of fellow musicians and fans. Although revered, some folks including fans and talent buyers stay away form homie or approach with great trepidation because of high risks of not giving 100% performance or skipping out on gigs. Some folks attend gigs just to see what homie is gonna pull from the hat. But HR is still revered regardless because there is that "charm" that draws people in. Hehehehe!! And a handful of people genuinly looked out for HR over the years. D.I.A/Jamekee is alwayz one... That Mexican cabrone Marco Aldaco in Hollywood also looked out on occasions regardless of intentions... But personally a lot of re$ource$ (that is still outstanding -- brethren first), plus time were spent on HR getting him back on track after falling a few times because of consistent "coherent" selfish games. (Joe has all his faculties intact at all times. Reason D.I.A does not accept or put up with his antics.)
D.I.A/Jamekee collectively has a professional relationship with HR form 1990. (Personal relationship goes back a few years.) Since 1990 on occasions, rebuilding confidence in fans, talent buyers and markets gave life to HR fronting for Bad Brains "one more time." NO DISPUTING THAT! This Includes the "Soul Brains" run. "Soul Brains" was Jamekee/D.I.A's concept when HR did not want to be associated with the word "bad" in Bad Brains. Then he had no interest in regrouping with Bad Brains for several reasons. Members of Bad Brains, Doc, Earl and Daryl had no interest in working with Joe (HR) either. Let us give benefit of the doubt they were sick of selfish shit behavior that tear down runnings everytime the band looks like it is going to shift into overdrive. HR was encouraged to regroup with Bad Brains via a series of 13 dates in Cali in 1997, with the worse Human Rights band ever (post 'God Of Love" album).
D.I.A was there again for HR when Dread Dayz sent a signal dude was "on his face" in Hollywood early 2004. So HR was tracked down and by June 2004, an artist redevelopment campaign was in place and being exucuted. Initially we cudd not get promoters and talent buyers to bite. It took one year before we got a gig at SOB's in NYC, May 28, 2005. A series of shows followed under the Global Rock Showcase down the Eastcost of the United States with ska legend Eric Monty Morris and a few fledgling bands as support. It was not an easy task. And big thanks to Grinding Faith, Dave Friend, Jeremy Vegan (Wilmington - NC), Mikey Sims (Nashville - TN) and company, Carl Hamm (Richmond - VA) and all who lend a bed and a place to crash in some instances.
It is now August, 2009 and HR has been gigging with Bad Brains for almost 3 years. D.I.A's hard work helped make this happen. The CBGBs gigs and all gigs thereafter, are results of D.I.A's hard work delivering HR to Global Rock Showcase gigs across the United Stated. Hey Yo!!! HR was even delivered to the Asbury Park - New Jersey, School Of Rock Festival June 24, 2007, and New York City boat ride gig June 25, 2007. Prior these two gigs, Global Rock Showcase dates were juggled and pushed back to accommodate HR with Bad Brains playing Sasquatch Festival at May 27, 2007, at The Gorge, Washington. After Sasquatch, we finished a series of Global Rock Showcase from the West coast ending at The Bar, Matairie/New Orleans, Louisiana June 22, 2007. (Wuddup Fuego krew). By the time we got to New Orleans, HR was adamant about not playing the Asbury Park and NYC boat gigs with Bad Brains. HR also refused to take scheduled flight to NYC after the New Orleans gig. So again D.I.A looked out for Earl, Doc, Daryl and Anthony County. Was not about to let homie miss any Bad Brains gigs and fuck up future gigs. To the disgust of tired and beaten down Dubb Agents musicians, we drove out with HR immediately after the Matairie gig about 2 a.m. June 23, 2007. Folks thought we were insane. Jason Browning, Pablo Fiasco and I (Barry DIA) took turns driving straight though stopping for only gas and half hour rest here and there. 1500 miles and about 22 hours later after dropping off the krew in Fall Church - Virginia and Baltimore - Maryland, HR and I pulled up to the hotel, were artists were staying for the School Of Rock Festival in Asbury Park. The Bad Brains krew were shocked and relieved when they connected with HR the morning of the Asbury Park gig. The old church van was fried and was never driven again after it was parked in NYC. So, lots of luv, hard work plus sacrifices went into supporting Bad Brains so they can do their "hi-end" gigs dude. HR was even billed as "HR (of Bad Brains) to keep the fire lit and for other reasons... There were never any semantics or hidden agendas man. That is what Brethrens do for I&I. Half the story has never been told. Half the story has never been told... NOW HR DOES NOT GO NEAR A COMPUTER. NEVER! Don't feel like chatting on phone with dude either. So minions -- please deliver this message... "Joe -- got all your messages. Even silent calls. Know you are tired of the crappy scene on downlow street plus all the hanger-ons and every one of the insincere individuals and clown acts around u. This includes the over-the-top grantstanding. Oh G-yea -- secure your wallet. (Send outstanding "tour support" for two years of hard work.) Definitely do not put your wallet in your boots and sleep in the same room as homeboy. By now "that bwoy -- the fifth member of Bad Brains -- shudd have learned a lot." (Know you chased that bwoy from around you several times.) Dude, maybe about your requests but not into any procrastination and "Love I" crap yo. Don't have time to squander any more. Just let current vibes run it's course. As mentioned D.I.A took you away from the Hollywood/LA gutter situations on a few occasions when no one gave pennies about about you. Not Bad Brains members (bar none), or their management. Not ur so-called friends who behave like they "Love I" and try living celebrity-hood vicariously through you. And definitely not the guitarists (Jason Browning), drummers (Michael Crevier) and bands (brought in the circle) who think they can advance careers in muzik through you. AWASO EL PASO!. El Paso, Texas is also know by locals as Chuco Town and El Chuco. Nestled amidst 3 mountains, the dusty West Texas town is located on the Rio Grande directly across from Juarez, Mexico. El Paso which means The Path is the real gateway to the heart of Mexico. And maybe because the town is somewhat isolated it was the perfect place for Outlaws and Bandoleeros to live and hang out. It is said the first gunfight took place Downtown El Paso that was notorious for swift gunslingers from Jesse James, John Wesley Hardin to Wyatt Earp. Actually legends have it Wyatt Earp was chased out of El Paso by a faster gunslinger before he went to the O.K. Corral, Tombstone AZ. Like outlaws and bandoleeros, Jamaican bad bwoys are alwayz virtually drawn to El Paso and the Wild Wild West. Maybe it is the combination of the Marty Robbins song 'El Paso', gritty outlaw westerns and legendary stories that pull some folks in. For instance, thousands of mile away in the Caribbean, it is a tradition for Jamaican deejays to adopt names of Western outlaws, cowboy actors and characters these actors play in westerns -- Bounty Killer, Lone Ranger, Tonto Metro, Tonto Irie, Jose Whales, High Plains Drifter, Billy Boyo, John Wayne, etc. Go figure. But up close El Paso has a cozy lazy charm and some kool people. Hard to put your finger on it but there is someting there just like the wild tumbleweeds that still blow across the roads in the dusty wind.
