**H U G - on the streets of Manhattan
September 13, 2007-
Surprising New Yorkers in the midst of their day, H U G was a city-sweeping performance installation that traveled across Manhattan. Appearing and disappearing without warning, pairs embraced for a little too long at each site before dispersing. The performers had a predetermined path to travel on public transportation between locations as well as specific times to execute each installation. The pairs were arranged in site-specific formations predetermined by each location’s uniqueness.
H U G created a seamlessly choreographed grand gesture, a jarring moment of vulnerability, easily discernible to the public who happened upon it. H U G blanketed scarred urban spaces that contained the memory of a momentous event of conflict while reminding observers of the ability to heal.
Sites were designated ahead of time from suggestions made by the public of personal and community conflict. As a part of the Conflux Festival 2007, witnesses were invited to travel the route with performers and photograph the event.
