Since 1988, the Humane Society of Louisiana has been at the forefront of cruelty prevention and animal protection efforts statewide. Since our headquarters and private animal shelter in New Orleans were destroyed in Katrina, we've been operating a makeshift shelter in nearby Tylertown, MS. We're still caring for animals at the site where we relocated our 157 animals to safety before the hurricane. Against the odds, we also operated a grassroots disaster relief shelter at Tylertown nicknamed 'Camp Katrina', which housed and cared for more than 1800 animals in the months immediately following the storm. We will never forget the kindness of wonderful donors and volunteers from across the country and Canada, who came to our aid in our darkest hour.
Our agency is not affiliated with any national humane agency--we're a local group working in the trenches, with a focus on defending all animals from cruelty, neglect and mistreatment. We're still working hard to recover from the hurricane, and we're always looking for new members and volunteers to get involved, to help us get reestablished in the Greater New Orleans area. We've also started a 'Paws to Rebuild' capital campaign to help us do needed construction and development at our property.
Our work to make our state more humane for all animals is critically needed. It's not widely known that most Louisiana parishes and towns lack even the most basic services for lost, injured, homeless and forsaken companion animals. Few humane education or wildlife protection programs exist in our state. Also, all too often, law enforcement agencies fail to respond to complaints of animal cruelty or neglect.
We're working to change all that. The Humane Society of Louisiana actively strives to create a better place for animals in our state, by operating a variety of important programs today and by tirelessly working to build a more humane tomorrow. As a licensed private detective agency, we work with law enforcement and animal control officers to accept custody of animals seized in criminal cases of abuse. We also accept animals from such cases from public and private animal shelters, to the extend funding permits. We are committed to preventing cruelty wherever it exists, because we believe all animals are deserving of our compassion and respect.
