FOOTBALL CHANTS IN HULL & NORTH EAST LINCS
A Football Chants singing project has been taking place at Longhill Primary School in Hull and at Middlethorpe Primary School in Cleethorpes.
Community musicians Pete Moran and Mike Allan led a group of young people from Year 5 in three after school workshops based on learning and writing football chants.
Through three workshops a group of around 20-30 children learnt how to make catchy rhythms using drums, horns and whistles and then compose their own football chants and sing them.
Following these workshops a performance session in school assembly meant that the young people could show off what they have learnt.
The project aims to encourage young people, especially boys to sing.
The musicians will also provide a teachers resource sheet to be left with the school to guide in future singing sessions.
WE TOOK PART IN NATIONAL YOUTH MUSIC WEEK 2007!
Music4U celebrated national Youth Music Week 2007 with a special programme of activities for young people in the Humberside area.
As part of the national celebration of Youth Music during October half term 2007, Music4U brought together young music makers from across all the four regions: Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire.
'Borders, Barriers and Bridges' was the name for the Music4U activities and a series of workshops were on offer over three days in all four regions with participants coming together for a rehearsal and shared performance at the Octagon Centre in Hull on the final day. The performance was filmed to be shown on BBC Big Screen in Hull later in the year.
Activities included African drumming, singing and rapping workshops with Polar Bear Poet.

Music
In just one day at half-term, a group of 20 young people aged between 8 and 12 learnt how to rap, write compose and perform their own songs. Community musicians, Jennie Beasty and Dave Watts put a creative spin on songwriting and the participants amazed with the results.
The session started with a rap based around excuses for not handing in homework and the young people enjoyed adding their own bizarre excuses! There were then opportunities to perform these raps to the rest of the group with a backing track to help them get the correct rhythm. This was the first time many of the participants had used a microphone and there were some helpful tips on hand from the tutors as to how to get the best sounds.
Creating a song from scratch was a more challenging task. To aid this process the musicians had a selection of magazines and newspapers and encouraged the young people to find words and phrases that they would like to use in their own songs. Then, working in small groups they linked their words together and picked themes for their songs.
Once the lyrics were in place, the tutors worked with the groups to create the music – some of this happened vocally and some with the help of xylophones to pick up a simple tune.
