About me:
The Corporation for the Performing arts in association with ARTS/West serving up more Humble Play festival!
The Humble Play: Appalachian New Play Festival returns for a fourth year and is being held from Monday, September 28 through Saturday, October 3, 2009. All performances and activities are held at ARTS/West, located at 132 W. State St. in Athens, Ohio.
This year’s festival is supported in part by the Athens Foundation and the Ohio River Border Initiative, a joint project of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. Seven winning plays were chosen from new works solicited from the entire country and will receive readings free and open to the public and will be presented at 7:00 PM at ARTS/West.
The winning playwrights come from a variety of states and backgrounds, including one local playwright. This year’s “The Pick of the Festival” will be presented by Athens’ own professional theater company: Brick Monkey.
ARTS/West Pick: "Romeo and Juliet; there Hasn't Been a Rap Song Yet!" by Rheal Radwany (Athens, Ohio) Direction by: The Lost Flamingo Company, Tuesday, September 29, 2009;
Producer's Choice: “A Case Is Never Closed” by J. Boyer (Tempe, AZ) Direction by: Actor's Moveable Theater, Wednesday, September 30, 2009;
Humble Pick “Touch” by Drew Larinore (Brooklyn, NY) Direction by: The Corporation for the Performing Arts, Thursday, October 1, 2009;
Appalachian Choice: “An Elegant Solution” by Celeste Parsons (Athens, Ohio) and “Apologia” by Katharine Bolger (New York, NY) Direction by: ABC Players, Friday, October 2, 2009;
Pick Of The Festival: “Japanese Schoolgirl Night” and “Knuckleheads” by James McLindon (Northampton, MA) Direction by: Brick Monkey, Saturday, October 3, 2009.
Each selected play will be presented as a reading. A reading is defined as actors presenting the words of a script, using scripts-in-hand. Each reading will be kept extremely simple so that the playwright’s words may be the focus of the event. All readings will be followed by a moderated talk back session where audience members are invited to give their feed-back on the plays.
There is an opening reception at 7 p.m. Monday, September 28, featuring a performance by Charlie Lewis, traditional pot-luck buffet and a screening of the Appalachian Green Parks Project documentary.
Many thanks to the Athens Foundation, The Ohio Arts Council, The Ohio River Border Initiative for making this festival possible.
