About World AIDS Day:
The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is the day when individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic.
2008 marked the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, and while we have come a long ways since 1988, there is still much more to be done.
The AIDS epidemic is a global emergency that affects people in every country on earth including our community in Humboldt County. Worldwide there are 33 million people living with HIV. Over 25 million others have died of AIDS since 1981. Nearly 60,000 people test positive for HIV every year in the United States. In Humboldt County there are currently between 300-500 people living with HIV/AIDS and nearly 150 residents have died of AIDS.

We've come a long way from the "ignorance and fear" that once defined the world's reaction to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, President-elect Obama says in a video message and statement released today to mark the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. But he also points out that we still have a long way to go to defeat HIV/AIDS, both here in the United States and globally.
