The band consists of Claudia Copier (vocals / percussion), Julija Hartig (violin), Arturo Ramón (flamenco guitar), Jan Rokyta (electr. & ac. cimbalom), Murat Yücel (electric guitars), Aristoteles Potamianos (double bass / bass guitar), Greg Smith (drums / percussion), Florian Magnus Maier (electronics, composition) and Manuel Cooymans (audio technique). The world's first electric cimbalom was designed and built for them by German artist Ralf Fischer.
Influences
Influences range from György Ligeti, Witold Lutoslavski and Astor Piazolla to Massive Attack, Paco de Lucía, Opeth and Morbid Angel. The blend is quite unlike anything you've heard.
An ensemble of seven virtuosos from different cultural and stylistic backgrounds, THE HUNGRY GODS were founded in 2003 by composer Florian Magnus Maier on request of the November Music festival in s'Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. Their first production, FEVER SEASON (on a text by American writer Andrew Hughes), was a big success in Holland and Belgium, described by the press as "injected with anabolics", "a half-hour shockwave" and "a big bang on a chamber music level". In 2006, they presented their first full evening show TRANSMOGRIFICATION, again in collaboration with Hughes.
Trademark of the ensemble is an enormous stylistic bandwidth, ranging from fragile counterpoint and eerie soundscapes to polyrhythmic insanity, passionate Eastern melodies and speed metal rockouts, as well as relentless intensity on stage and a high level of musicianship. The unusual orchestration as well as the inclusion of new instruments provides the band with a unique and immediately recognizable sound, and aims to attract and satisfy any audience in any venue.
We just finished the movie "Elvenland" by Rotterdam filmmaker Karel Doing. The movie will premiere in 2009, and we'll play the soundtrack live to the movie. Details will follow.
The next thing after this, if the powers that be support the idea, is a theater production of Amsterdam director Marcel Sijm, who wants to adapt Frankenstein for toddlers with us.
