About me: Hi, I am Randy. I am 5'9, right now about 170. I have brown hair, blue eyes and consider myself not too bad looking. I have great friends and a greater wife. I love her. Oh lets not forget that I have a 16 yr old daughter who is the coolest kid ever. Im retired from the Air Force after over 20 years. I work on Bragg and just doin this for kicks.
The bond between a father and daughter is indescribable. It is possibly the strongest bond, and for it to be broken takes a lot. Imagine a bond you have with someone so close and dear to you, taken away, in a matter of seconds. You don’t see it coming and it just hits you.
On October 4th, 2008, my fathers life was taken. When I spoke with him on the phone 30 minutes before the accident, everything was fine. He was the lively and happy guy I knew him to be. Since day one he has been my guardian angel and my best friend, and his life was taken because of I reckless 73 year-old woman. This woman took a left hand turn out in front of my father who was on his motorcycle. Riding his motorcycle was not only his hobbies but a passion for him. When he rode he rode for freedom, and for fun. It is heartbreaking to know that my father was out doing something he loved when someone took his life. Not only was he out doing something he loved but he was on his way to support a good friend that was in a tournament.
My father always wore his helmet, but in this case It wasn’t enough. The impact was so strong that the helmet flew from his head. He was found 30 feet from where is bike was found. He was not breathing. My best friend died. Mercy flight eventually came and rushed him to UNC. Thankfully they at least got him breathing but with no clothes or anything they didn’t know who he was. He had broken ribs, a broken collar bone, broken nose, broken bones in his ear, his ear was literally ripped from the head, broke wrist, which now has metals plates and 7 screws in it, and the worst of all, brain injuries.
November 11, he was released from the hospital. For that month and 7 days he was in the hospital I thank god for being with him and I thank god for the wonderful wife god blessed him with. She never once left his side. To see my father just there and not the loving and happy guy he was, but instead with brain monitors sticking out of his head and only breathing because of life support it sickening. For a 16 year old girl to see her best friend like that is traumatic. Because of this careless woman my dad was in the hospital on his birthday, and because of this woman, I had to go live with my mother far away in New York. You might not understand, but that was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I’ve never lived with her for more then a summer and leaving my dad knowing he was in that critical condition was like taking my own life. I missed a lot of school because for days I would just lay in my bed crying. This way of life was much to hard to handle for a 16 year old girl. I thank god everyday for the wonderful people at UNC.
I’m truly grateful that my dad got another chance. I thank god everyday, but here’s what people don’t see. Everyday my dad has some different doctors appointment and a physical therapy appointment. Everyday he is taking at least 10 different medications three times a day. Not to mention we can never play soccer like we used to and do things like we used to because just walking to the bathroom takes all of his energy. Everyday my father is in pain. For a 42 year old man, this is not fair. He does not deserve this pain and suffering. He doesn’t remember a lot of our memories because of all the brain damage. What hurts me the most is knowing that, that careless woman, is still out there driving today. Might I add after the investigation, because police have no sympathy for motorcyclist, the 73 year old woman didn’t even get a ticket. It’s a shame. Thanks to this woman my father has missed out on a lot that a once healthy 42 year old man could do. I still cry to this day at the thought of it. He is still my father, my guardian angel, and my best friend, but he is just not the same as before. Never again can my dad help me train for soccer season, and never again can my dad play softball like he used to love to do.
So, please drivers, watch out for motorcyclist. Have more respect and pay more attention. Thanks to a reckless driver my dad will be paying medical bills forever. He will never remember old memories and will never be the same.
