Bio
...... .. .. ...... .. .. ...... ...... .. .. ...... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ....... .. .. Hunting Hat , the nom de guerre of singer-songwriter Kyle Gootkin, makes the kind of lo-fi, guitar-based song sketches that frustrate and delight in equal measure. On the one hand, they're so fragile and haunting that part of you wants to grab hold of Gootkin and tell him to cheer up. On the other, they're so fragile and haunting that you want to curl up in a ball and weep. It's a delicate balance. Who I Thought is taken from his new EP There Are Plenty of People Younger Than You; I'm One of Them. It's an unsettling mix of cheap-sounding jack-hammer beats, distant guitar lines and a Julian Casablancas-style vocal buried in so much distortion that it's impossible to make out a single word. - The Guardian .. .. "Hunting Hat’s There are plenty of people younger than you; I'm one of them. (punctuation included) constitutes more “poppy indie basement jangle,” with minimal, lo-fi production and pervasive, Daniel Johntson-esque bummerific-ness. The inclusion of a childhood photo (presumably of Gootkin) smiling gawkily and singing into a kids’ tape recorder as the album art seals the nostalgic, time-worn quality of the production; it’s an aesethic quirk that extends to the “Who I Thought” single as well (the B-side is a remix by Bellingham Juke-jock Simon Ho/Cedaa). TAPOPYTYIOOT’s explicit nostalgia and rustic, halcyon innocence sounds tainted by an underlying darkness, walking that same delicate line as, say, the first sixteen episodes of Twin Peaks. But this new release is not totally without surprises for those at least marginally familiar with Hunting Hat. The aforementioned “Who I Thought” rides a stuttering electronic beat and features a simple, mournful guitar melody, ‘verbed-out production, and Casablancas-esque vocal stylings." - The Stranger .. .. "Kyle Gootkin’s got it figured out. Just last month Hunting Hat (Gootkin’s solo outfit) released Vampire Christmas, a short, dark and breathy lo-fi single that normally would have lost my attention if it weren’t so damn good. Rewind four months: Hunting Hat released Font, Out a three song online-CD5 on bandcamp.com. Second song in and I’m downloading the rest of Hunting Hat’s discography of “basement chillwave.” Really, it’s that good. While Hunting Hat’s other bandcamp singles are by and large instrumentals, Font, Out is lead by Gootkin’s beautiful vocals, making these three dreary and catchy songs even more sweet than short (under eight minutes). Ok, and you know what? Let’s rewind one more month! Hunting Hat presents I Am Leaving To Go Places, an EP that perfectly sets the tone for the singles and EP to follow, as well as …The Lemon Houses, the non-linear full-length of songs, samples and noise quietly released over the summer. While Font, Out is what led me to writing this review, it’s difficult to just stop at that EP. Check it out and you’ll know what I mean.." - What's Up Magazine .. .. "The music is murky, soft, and dark...It's perfect music to listen to at midnight after a dip in the pool." - JUNGLE ROT .. .. '"Home, WA” is a churning, half-hazy, lo-fi gem..." - THE ROAD GOES EVER ON. .. .. "I don't know if it's the psychedelics in the summer air, the lingering effects of a re-watching of The Devil and Daniel Johnston, or some long-simmering dispute with pop music, but Bellingham WA's Hunting Hat have hit a nail on the head. The nail is me, the head is my head, but it's not so much a "hit." It's like when you fire a missile at the blob and it kinda gets stuck in sludge, making a slight outdent in the back of the creature before it's inevitably absorbed. "2009 (Death Wave)" contains a guitar loop that would make Ducktails blush, tape hiss for the hip kids, and wisps of warbly weird sadness we can all relate too." - I'M INTO C.B. .. .. SODA POP CULTURE INTERVIEW (http://sodapopculture.tumblr.com/post/1118744743) .. .. "Listening to Hunting Hat's homespun recordings, I could picture the swirling lo-fi hums and whispers being generated by such a device. Seeing Hunting Hat live ought to be odd, considering their recordings evoke the feeling of a found radio station, lost to time, discovered after midnight on a long drive out of town. Voices drift in and out through tin-can telephones, and you're left with a strangely distant memory of having heard a song, somewhere, sometime. " --WEEKLY VOLCANO .. .. "Hunting Hat is from Bellingham/Tacoma. Rightfully, "A Vampire Christmas" sounds like classic Northwest. Halfway in between the solemn, broken lo-fi aspects of The Microphones and the cynical melancholy of early Modest Mouse the song simply but surely leaves its imprint." - Bohemian Cuddle Box .. .. ...... .. .. .. ............ .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .<i class=i>!!!
