In case you have not heard of Hurricane Boxing Gym, please allow me to share some history with you. Hurricane Boxing Gym was founded in 2003 by Wilberto Velez, under section 501 (c)(3), who saw the Boxing gym as a tool to keep kids out of the street, as it did for him and many that contribute to the program. He utilized his personal time and individual effort to create a second home for local youth. But, he has solely funded the club and without external support. The gym is a second home to many youths, who have chosen to spend their time in a productive manner, and it has allowed them to participate in numerous competitive events. The events we have attended have been local, regional, state and out of state. This has been accomplished thanks to the contribution of volunteer staff.
The organization began as a Boxing Club, but a year ago, Mr. Velez and Mr. Hurtado De Mendoza envisioned something much more profound, so they teamed up and started working on a new goal, a Program, which will not just facilitate a physical outlet to underprivileged and troubled youth, but also enrich their mind, and change their misconceptions about life and society, which in turn would open up windows of opportunities.
Our facility is composed of a Boxing training area, a weight room, and a conditioning area (.."Torture Chamber..").We are Located on 3715 E. 7th Ave.(Ybor City), Tampa, FL 33605, and we open from Monday to Friday..
Our members have a variety of personal goals, some do it for fun and fitness and others to compete. We are honored with the presence of fitness enthusiasts, weekend warriors, and competitive amateur and professional boxers. We are a U.S.A. Boxing certified training center.
Our Team is proud to wear "HIT HARD/Las Vegas" Boxing Trunks. Photos by John XD. Tank Tops courtesy of Mr. Carlos Quiles and the NYPD.
