me:)Born I was born David Neal Matthews on April 25th in Nashville Tn at Baptist Hospital at 4:29 am;). My Great grand father Neal Matthews Sr. and his wife Evelyn built a house that still stands in west Nashville. There they owned the first record cutter in Nashville. Grandaddy was also in the pioneering opry band , "the Crook Brothers". Bluegrass greats the likes of Bill Monroe would call my great grandmother and tell her what tracks to cut off of the radio. His son Neal Jr. (my great uncle) would become a Jordanire (Elvis' backing band and hold the world record for accompanying the most artist with background vocals). His brother my grandfather Roger, was and is presently currently involved in the gospel music scene. The best way to describe my families up bringing is to say, watch the Cohen Brothers film"O Brother Where art thou".
I wrote the above to honor my family , because they are still comming into their clarity as to why i legally changed my name. So July 2006 i legally changed my name to Hururiel Ahaja. Tell you why later. Any how, after moving to the west coast i feel very fourtanate-sp to grow up in "music city" which is really music business city. Every one has a publishing company , everyones dad played keys for Chicago or blah blah blah. But everyone also played alot of music,,,,all the time.
My pops Barry & Daddy Roger , bought me a acoustic alverez when i was nine and was taught "house of the rising son". Alittle before then my ass was glue to the couch of my grandparents house, totally blow away by this new thing called ,"Grunge". Nirvana, Metallica,Megadeth, Tool, Melvins, Pearl Jam, The Breeders, Smashing Pumpkins ,Soundgarden,Alice in Chains. Milli Vannilli and M.C. Hammer were now past, and music ,,,,,,music was back. not trying to be the best, but just being. Using music to express those parts of our selves that only a fraction of what words can.
So, at @ 16 i took up the bass, studyed like a fat kid eats buffetts (sorry fat kids you know what im talkin bout). I had my first lesson with Reggie Wooten , the oldest brother of the Wootens(see bela fleck/victor wooten/futureman)-this makes me cooler than you:)ego(: anyway.
I would jam free form to Weather report records , then wake up to Jaco Pastorious dvds.
Time would go one , i would meet Nevin OHearn, we would start Thorus, the greatest metal band that would only play to a wolf spider!!!(r.i.p August Bohlinger) I was playing drums at the time.
So after Thorus disbanded, i was sad :( like that but kinda sad and mad like this }:(. I was studying Bohnam and funk beats, until Alice in Chains came to town.
That night i was borrowing a 12 string from dr, wrote 2 songs said,,, "i love this"then met a chick, she gave me an epiphone {which i smashed behind Chris Spheeris's house a year later}, (that my way of letting go) from there songs came through rapid fire."rapid i tell you!" And it was as if i was !THRUST! on stage. A year would go by 67 songs copywritten 5 little french boy shorts????? and many shows later, i would meet the first peace of the continually unfolding "nuevo grunge alliance" hey i like that ,,,,,,"nuevo grunge alliance" cool };(!!! okay any way....
Enter Beau Ellis Beegle, check out his band Rock Star Death Cult, and his solo stuff. One thing led to another and we decided to move to Portland , where "people didn't suck???"ha . I completed the recording of Hury Ahaja 888 demo in Nashville and we hit the road. The shows , the groopies , the rashes , the creams. I decided to leave portland and move to Sedona Az, we played a couple of shows there and it was nice and sunny. To be continued............................?
