Husky was originally a solo project for Husky Gawenda -singer, songwriter and guitarist - which developed into a four-piece act. Husky (the person) and Gideon Preiss - keyboardist, singer, songwriter and cousin to Husky - have been locked away for the past few months in Sing Sing Studios and their backyard bungalow come home studio, recording what is becoming a richly woven and adventurous collection of songs. These songs will make up Husky’s second album, due for release early 2010. Husky (the band) came to be when Husky Gawenda and Gideon Preiss combined with Melbourne musicians Evan Tweedie (bass) and Luke Collins (drums). There was an immediate musical chemistry and sense of rightness about the union. They have now spent the last year playing in Melbourne and up the East Coast of Australia. They are known by their fans, for heartfelt and memorable performances. In a short time, Husky has shown that they are fast becoming one of the Melbourne acts to keep an eye on. They won the audience vote at the St Kilda Festival in ‘08 earning them a spot on the Main Stage. They were invited to play the Spiegeltent for the Melbourne International Arts Festival, capturing the hearts and imagination of a sell out crowd. They recently received a Vic Rocks grant to record their album, which is taking shape as we speak. Husky launches the first single Dark Sea from their forthcoming sophomore album with a string of shows along the East Coast this November. The album, which is almost complete, is being co-produced by both Husky and Gideon. With warm guitars and ancient pianos, rolling drums and boundless melodies, with gently picked strings and whispered daydreams that speak of other worlds and times, it is set for release early 2010. ‘‘I try to write songs that tell a true story. Not in the sense that the song is factual, but in the sense that it rings true for people and for me, lyrically and musically. We love playing together and singing together. Gideon and I grew up listening to our folks’ records and now we’re trying to make records together that stand up against the ones we loved as kids. Our songs are influenced by all the old and new music we listen to, folk, blues, classical, pop, choral music, and we’re inspired by the great novels and poems we read and the great musical community in which we live, here in Melbourne.’’ Husky Gawenda
DARK SEA
Great melodies in this one. Really subtle but it manages to do a lot of things right. If you like Grizzly Bear or Fleet Foxes, you'll dig this. 4/5
