Special Olympics NY - Hudson Valley Region's Interests
General

MISSION To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, including mental retardation giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. Through their participation in Special Olympics New York athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image, which carries into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community.

HISTORY Under the leadership and guidance of Dorothy Buehring Phillips, Special Olympics was organized in the state of New York in 1969. Phillips sent a New York contingent to the Northeast Regional Special Olympics in Boston, Massachusetts to represent Special Olympics New York. Dorothy Buehring Phillips was appointed New York's first State Director and in six months Special Olympics New York hosted the first State Games in Rochester, June 1970. Today, Special Olympics New York is the largest program of its type in the United States, serving nearly 40,000 athletes with the support of over 25,000 volunteers. Special Olympics New York is headquartered in Schenectady with regional offices in Long Island, New York City, Hudson Valley, Central, and Genesee..

FUNDING SOURCES Special Olympics New York is a privately funded not-for-profit 501(c)3 agency that raises its operating budget mainly through the support and generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations. Special Olympics New York does not charge its athletes or their families to participate. Consequently, all moneys spent for athletes, coaches, competitions and volunteers must be raised through fund-raising activities.

We had 100 plungers raising over $45,000 in last years plunge. Help us double it this year. 100% of all proceeds go to our 3,500 Athletes in the Hudson Valley. With your help, you can make their goals and dreams come true! Please help the Athletes with your support!

WHAT IS A POLAR PLUNGE ? A Polar Plunge is your chance to be one of the thousands of chilled souls across the country who have plunged into winter waters to show their support and raise money for the Special Olympics. In three plunges held in February and March of 2007 Special Olympics New York - Hudson Valley Region raised over $45,000 with almost 100 people taking the plunge!

HOW CAN YOU PLUNGE ? Plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $100 to take the plunge and receive an official plunge sweatshirt. Plungers are able to set up their very own Personal Plunge Page to fundraise online and reach out to all of their contacts with a click of the mouse!

SET UP YOUR VERY OWN PLUNGE PAGE! Set up your own Team Fundraising page where each team member can make their own site - complete with photos and a personal letter that they can send out to all of their contacts with a click of the mouse! Donating online through Firstgiving is secure and easy!

BE A TEAM CAPTAIN! Grab your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers and form a team! The more the merrier! Make costumes, dress alike, challenge another group! It's fun! Prizes will be awarded at each plunge for Largest Team and Highest Fundraising Team!

ATTENTION COMPANIES AND ORGANIZATIONS Looking for great way to boost employee morale, encourage teambuilding, generate positive PR for your company/organization, while giving back to your community?

Then Jump Right In! You can receive exposure opportunities for your company and organization based on your fundraising!
