hwaet is a collaboration between vanessa niwi rossetto (the mighty acts of god, pulga) and steven flato (solo, and mouth to mouth).
the duo is based in free improvisation, but due to their long distance collaboration, this is heard within the context of recorded compositions that are informed by the initial improvised material. tracks will usually start off as one long improv from one of them, and
then the other will craft a response to it through improvisation,
musique concrete cutting, or a mix of both. the duo uses a mix of
conventional and unconventional instruments, from viola played with
loose bow hair, tilt tray, and amplified room sounds (niwi) to bowed acoustic guitar, open mixer circuits, and amplified small objects processed live in max/msp (steve).
steven
flato resides on long island, new york and vanessa rossetto resides in
austin, texas.
