Detroit sports, movies, television, music & screenwriting... possibly in that order. Ehh... possibly not
Music
Man, it's hard to narrow down all the music I'm into. I guess my top five, regardless of genre (and in no particular order) looks like this:
1. Peter Gabriel
2. Our Lady Peace
3. There's about a bazillion-way tie for the third through fifth spots. It probably depends on whatever I'm listening to at the moment... which you can read about in some of my blogs. Y'know... if you really care.
Movies
Top Five of the last Ten Years:
1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
2. The Matrix
3. Spider-Man 2
4.The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
5. Scream/Fight Club/Goodwill Hunting (3-way tie)
Top Five Movies (All-Time):
1. The original Star Wars Trilogy
2. Field of Dreams
3. Terminator 2
4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (hell, you can probably just put that whole trilogy in this spot.)
5. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Television
Top five shows still on the air:
1. Lost
2. 24
3. Entourage
4. House
5. Bones (I can't believe it either.)
Update!! Entourage has fallen off dramatically (heh. I said "dramatically," and it's a comedy. Funny.) since it's ridonkulous 2nd season, so I'd probably slot "Life" in at number 5 on my list and push the other shows behind it up one slot.
Top Five Shows (All-Time):
1. Farscape
2. Dead Like Me
3. Angel
4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
5. Wonderfalls/Firefly (tie)
..
Books
1. "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger (This is probably on everyone's list-and if it's not, it should be.)
2. "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller (It might not have had as much to say as Watchmen, but you know what? It's more entertaining. There. I said it.)
3. Anything by Robert Aspirin (particularly the "Myth" series. These books got me through my teens. I'm a bit old for 'em now, but I still love them.)
4. Anything by Lloyd Alexander (ditto)
5. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" by J.K. Rowling (loved this book-hated the movie for reasons too convoluted to get into here.)
Also, see my Kurt Vonnegut rant on the RunnAMC myspace page (listed under my friends).
Heroes
Lou Whitaker, my parents... probably not in that order. My brother, but don't tell him that.
Oh, and these guys...
About me: Um... Hi. I'm Mike, and I'm trying to make it as a professional writer. I live in Michigan. This is sort of a problem.
Still, I've already managed to get a job... selling sporting goods. Ahem. Anyway, there have been a few bright spots. I've managed to get a short story published in a small (but plucky!) writing magazine. And after finishing a year-long stint at MPI of Michigan (a one-year film program), I was also briefly employed as a reader for a production house that shall remain unnamed ('cuz that's how I roll).
I've also managed to finish in the Top 20 of the 2006 Slamdance Teleplay Competition (out of more than 600+ entries) for writing a spec pilot called "Wake the Devil."
So I got that goin' for me. And the first ultra-low-budget short I made, "Suburban Heroes," has played on big screens in Royal Oak as part of the Mitten Movie Project and in New Mexico as part of Tromadance... New Mexico.
And that should just about bring you up to speed. So let's see what happens next.
Who I'd like to meet: In no particular order: Joss Whedon, Suzie McNeil, the President, Tim Minear, Nathan Fillion, any famous actress named Jessica ('cuz they're all really, really hot-must be the name... or possibly genetics... hard to say which, really...), Dane Cook, Joe Dumars, the Wachowski brothers... alright, now I'm just listing random names. I'll stop now.
Lou Whitaker, because he's my childhood baseball hero.
Damn... the Tigers need some relief help this year, stat, so I wouldn't mind meeting a flamethrower whose comfortable in pressure situations. Eric Gagne, maybe? Whose available? What's up with Zumaya's arm? As Joe Schmo likes to say... "What is going ON around here?" UPDATE!! Well, Zumaya's arm got better, then he hurt it again, then the Tigers traded half their farm system for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. What a bizarre turn of events! And you know what? I love it. They had to make that move. Why not go for it all right now? Cabrera's gonna want a ton of money in two years, but hell, he's only in his mid-twenties. He'll probably be worth it. And Willis... maybe he'll regain his All-Star form, maybe he won't. But you can't tell me he's not good enough to be a fifth-starter on a contender. Plus, he seems like a nice kid who cares about the history of the game, so I'll be rooting for him.
