Books
Many social and political changes have taken place since Ghetto Passport was first published in 2004. Because of this, Michael felt compelled to re-edit, and re-introduce Ghetto Passport.
Michael McKenzie goes beyond the status quo as he links an experienced life of southern privation to societal factors that have a direct impact on the latter. In other words: academia, sociology, urban affairs, and politics are complected with activism and hip-hop. The result: Ghetto Passport, a Non-Fiction Novel.
Michael’s stream of conscious extrudes through the pages as he writes to represent those who look like him and whose pain, fear, triumph, and questions are those in which he owns. Enthralled by great African American writers such as Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Mayo Angelo, Michael Eric Dyson, Claude Brown, Cornell West, W.E.B. Dubois, Malcolm X and others, Ghetto Passport, a Non-Fiction Novel is unquestionably written with passion, purpose, and fervor.

Biography
Michael McKenzie was born in 1977 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As a child, Michael experienced firsthand the ills of life in a household with limited income and low educational attainment. Despite that reality, Michael went on to become a standout football player at Southern University High School and a record-breaking football player at Millsaps College where he earned his first degree in Applied Sociology during the summer of 1999. Michael was the first in his family to graduate from college. Michael also earned a Masters Degree in Education with an administrative focus from Texas Southern University. Respectively, Michael earned special education credentials from the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, Texas.
As a 1999 NCAA All-American candidate at tailback, Michael became Millsaps College’s all-time career leader in all-purpose yards. Those records still stand. However, a torn Achilles tendon cut a possible NFL career short, and thus, Michael was forced look beyond football as a career option. Michael then accepted a teaching position in the Baton Rouge School System as a special education instructor. While teaching in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Michael was inspired to write Ghetto Passport. Michael felt that most of the challenges that he faced as a child growing up in Baton Rouge were quite similar to that of the children he was teaching and that the story of poor black children was either not being told correctly or not being told by those who actually experienced such a life firsthand.
Michael remains active in underserved communities and speaks to young men and women on a continuous basis regarding the importance of making the right choices, educational attainment, setting and achieving goals, resiliency, and cultural responsibility.
