The Most EP: 1.Maybe Maybe 2.Lookin’ Real Pretty 3.Lazy 4.Can’t Do Nothin’
Although I’ve reviewed quite a few local bands EP’s since the fanzine started, I can’t think of one that’s been as difficult and as much fun to write as this. Once again, the CD comes to me in pure demo format with no frills. Ah, a track listing! Now we’re getting somewhere. Receiving stuff in this format is something I’ve learned not be fooled or put off by. This short, raucous collection of retro-punk numbers from The Most is definitely a case in point.
“Maybe Maybe” licks off with a neat little bass solo before accelerating with style into a blazing garage-punk riff. The vocals are pitched quite high and delivered at high speed with clarity. I found the lyrics to be a bit trite, making it an ideal pop-punk single! The lead-out was clever, utilising slowdown and feedback instinctively.
“Lookin’ Real Pretty” made me laugh aloud every time I heard it, and it delighted me. From the once again cleverly crafted intro (with a great little spoken vocal hook) to the dreadful yet hilariously un-pc line with your long dark hair and your blood red lips//I’m begging you baby, let me suck your tits. I nearly shat laughing! As before, the lead-out is well thought out and brings it down effortlessly.
A formula seems to be developing here: clever intros and lead-outs; catchy trash-punk lyrics; killer vocal hooks; high octane garage-punk guitar riffery. It’s all adding up quite nicely at the moment. As we know, though, formulae are always more potent once they’ve been tested. “Lazy” is the tester. The Most lurch into this deliciously sleazy sounding number. Subtle tempo changes, mistimed pauses, drawling backing vocals and off-beat guitar riffs give the song a, well…lazy feel. The guitar break at the end of the instrumental breakdown is as exquisite as the high tempo 8 bar chord sequence that leads into it. It is accompanied by some neat little drum-rolls and a tight bass line, giving it a real seventies retro feel.
“Can’t Do Nothin’” is a straight in, no-nonsense rock ‘n roll stomper which warms the heart and sets the feet to twitching. It has a clever little false ending in the middle followed by another chorus and a brilliant, exhilarating, early-sixties sounding instrumental break with some impressive high-speed, top-end bass accompaniment.
