INFLUENCES:
Randy Newman, Talking heads, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Counting Crows, Crosby Stills and Nash, Bob Marley, Micheal Jackson, The Racontuers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hendrix, Cream, Jeff Buckley, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Damien Rice, Tom McRae, John Mayer, The White Stripes, Sonic Boom 6, Bernard Fanning, Alcoholic drinks, Free, Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Huey Lewis and the News, John Frusciante, Johnny Cash, Jose Gonzalez, Frank Sinatra, Billy Connolly, Bill Hicks, Richard Prior... and anyone else I've come to like...
I mostly like a good song... and there in would lie my influences... Melody... Nice harmonies... A clever sentiment... A subtle, unpretentious and honest lyric... (Oh hang on I've blown that one now by being a touch pretentious myself.) A little bit of guitar... maybe even a face full of guitar... drums and beats I like to be enthused with vitality... yeah, I quite like it like that... A beautiful warm day... sitting around with people you pretty much love and not doing much of anything...except... being...
"The voice sounds somewhere between Eagle Eye Cherry and Stone Temple Pilots unplugged with a hint of Jamie Cullum. The guitar playing reminds you of those summers at the cabin by the lake, hangin' around doing absolutely nothing..." Kinky Star - Belgium.
"I don't know why the fuck you bother..." Richard Hall - Best Friend.
Where and when I was born and what TV show was on at the time? My favourite school teacher and where he touched me? Which colour or food or guitar pick I consider my favourites? How long it takes me to write a song and where the inspiration comes from?
WHAT?! Where’ve you been? You’ve clearly missed all the relevant details thus far.
Oh how we laughed…
However, there were tears too… big, salty, cheek-streamers rolling down in sepia tones… up there on the cinematic wide screen of life… moving stuff.
I, Ian Britt, have taken on and conquered inter-galactic bad boys with my melodies, I’ve pacified and brought down fascist regimes with my honest and insightful wordsmanship (that’s lyrics to those amongst the group who require actual-and-proper words.) I’ve irreversibly altered whole cultural belief systems for the greater good in a single live performance swoop… and above all else… my most exquisite of all achievements… I have used my position of power and influence to climb into bed with very, very beautiful women.
Oh, and also… I’ve fallen deeply and hopelessly in love with everyone I’ve ever met in that extremely mountainous country of Holland.
One man said of Ian Britt (that’s me) : “Oh him? He seems like a decent bloke, yeah.”
Another said: “Who? Oh, that pillock?! Meh.”
Needless to say then, I’ve been busy with music in my head and heart all my life and even more so since the release of my debut album in 2005. I’ve done quite a lot I’d say, busy bee Britt. I’ve released a lot more music, toured and gigged all over the world, worked with people to write and release music in collaborations and side projects… all this as well as relentlessly asking my family for hand outs and freebies.
They call people like me: “musicians.”
* spits on floor *
But the story isn’t over yet. The best is yet to come, or so we all kid ourselves…
The best way to fill in the details is to get down to an Ian Britt show, or add him on facebook/hyves/msyspace and ask the man himself, he’ll be more than happy to talk about himself for a few months whilst trying to get his hands in your pockets for scraps of food or silver coins.
Failing that, email ianbrittmusic@googlemail.com and ask for some “free music” and a smacked bottom. Both requests will be gladly met.
PRESS
"One Day I" culminate in a grand and commandingly produced soulful, Trans-Atlantic sound with mature, honest, sometimes humorous lyrical writing, assured technical ability and a keen melodic pop-rock-radio sensibility" NIGEL WILLIAMSON – Uncut Magazine.
“Definitely one to keep my eyes on.” STEVE LAMACQ – BBC Radio1, U.K.
"long Live Ian Britt!" FRITS SPITS - National Radio 2, Holland.
"I dont know whay the f*ck you bother." RICHARD HALL - Best Friend.
"...his music is infused with beachy sunshine and easy island vibes... Britt is something akin to coffeehouse strummers like Howie Day or Gavin DeGraw, but with the added barefoot effortlessness of Jack Johnson. With songs that radiate positivity and good feelings, Britt’s songs would make for a wonderful soundtrack to movie title sequences... Sailing to our shores on a wave of raves from the across-the-pond outlets (Uncut, BBC Radio 1, etc.), Britt is guaranteed to add levity to any project and smiles to any listener’s lips." RUMBLEFISH - U.S.A
