   About Ian Giles

One of the three original members of Magpie Lane along with Andy Turner and Mat Green. Sophie Polhill, Marguerite Hutchinson and Jon Fletcher completing the line-up.

I am also a member of early music group the Oxford Waits along with Tim Healey (founder), Charles Spicer, Caroline Butler and Edward Fitzgibbon, and I had a great time working with Graham Metcalfe and Ian Woods as G.M.W. I am currently working on a new three part vocal group by the name of Vinegar Tom, with Darren Ormandy and Kathryn Nutbeem.

All this and working for the instrument shop The Music Room, as well as performing at Warwick Castle for the Highwayman's Supper evenings,various recording projects, and calling for the Oxford based country dance band Larkrise Ranters keeps me pretty busy, but I've usually got time to get to the Sunday session at the Half Moon in Oxford.

Choonz entered in an Irish Music
Battle of the Bands!

Hi,
Choonz have entered an Irish music battle of the Bands competition online Youtube Link

The winners get 5 nights playing  at the Monte Carlo Casino in Las
Vegas. This would obviously be quite nice. Seriously though, we would
really love this opportunity and this would give us the publicity
needed to start our career as a touring band.

      WE NEED YOUR VOTE!! Please take the time to forward this to some people in your address book. Voting ends in a few days so please don't delay. It only takes a minute to register your vote!
Anyway, enough grovelling from us. To vote for us

(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Orpheus Britannicus- A Dance of the Hearts

Mercurius
Company are presenting a celebration of Purcell's 350th Anniversary, in
a fully staged performance of some of his most inspired music,
including excerpts from operas and incidental works.  With period
instruments, costumes and dance.

This is a totally
independently produced and funded. Let's show all that despite economic
uncertainty, financial crisis and turmoil there are people who still
dare to dream and produce something exciting and inspiring.

WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Jul 5 2009 7:03 PM

We are looking forward to seeing our friends next weekend (10th to 12th July) at Roger's Rant - a Dorset celebration of traditional & contemporary folk music, song and dance. There will be some of the best of local amateur singers and musicians as well as some from further afield. There is also the opportunity for aspiring singers and musicians to have a go in a friendly atmosphere at the Sports Club. The Village Hall will be used for the dance workshops on Saturday & Sunday afternoons, with a Ceilidh on Saturday evening.

I have found you on youtube with Vinegar Tom.
Didn't realise it was you Ian, I was looking for my usual fix of Katherine singing here
And low and behold there you are here
How wonderful two of my most favourite singers together.

Hi dearie, all is well thanks! Have found some good folk clubs and sessions in Liverpool - though I do miss Oxford and your singing. We must catch up when I'm next visiting.
How are you - things at the Castle still good? Love Clare xx

Hallo Ian, thank you for your friendship! Your music is great!
Please visit my HP: www. cultevents. de and sign the guestbook if you like!

Music has always been a place where anything is possible - a refuge, a magical world where anyone can go, all kinds of people can come together, and anything can happen.
We are limited only by our imagination. I believe that what we do and learn inside the world of music can affect what goes on in the world in a big, positive way. music is so important - like food and water. There are so many possibilities, and many doors yet to be opened.

76 of 230, walkaboutsverse. 741. com: LAND RIGHTS

If there is a good thing
From the Second World War
It’s that most peoples learnt
To conquer lands no more.

In Africa, Asia,
And the Pacific, too:
Post-war independence -
Steps only bigots rue.

But for some indigenes,
Outnumbered much-too-much,
It has all come too late
For liberty, as such.

So ‘tis in Australia,
And America’s sites,
Where the best now, I think,
Is to respect land rights.

Hi Ian,
I was reminiscing recently about the Sunday evening sessions in Oxford in the early 1990s, but couldn't remember the name of the pub. We all sat round in an elongated circle and we used to be given lovely left over roast potatoes etc. What was the pub please?
