Ian's Interests
|
| General | food:
what's the story behind Andy Capp's sponsoring of hot fries? Of all comic characters, why Andy Capp? I'm sure there is a very good reason, but I don't know the story
| | Movies | that Twillight New Moon vampires movie had the third highest opening weekend ever, behind only Batman and Spiderman. I'd never even heard of the Twillight New Moon vampires prior to Friday when everyone on the facebook was all abuzz. Congrats for once again proving that estrogen can indeed be a big box office draw
| | Books | this was supposed to be a blog, but I never got around to finishing it and I prolly won't so here go a coupla paragraphs
Falnama: The Book of Omens
so I've been to the Sackler/Freer galleries 'bout a bajillion times. They always have free movies on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Usually they are somewhere between pretty good and awesome. Even those that are less than stellar offer an interesting insight into the day-to-day lives of folks in other places/eras/economic brackets. Thought provoking, entertaining, and free = a good way to kill a few hours. And you'd be surprised at how receptive chicks are when asked if they would like to attend a screening of a foreign film at an art museum. Their estrogen levels get raised above candles and chocolates and just below shoe shopping
had never taken an official tour before though, and since there was one starting in a few minutes, decided to be a good tourist and join in. Dude knew his art better than me, but his history was kinda spotty. Didn't correct him or elaborate on anything he neglected (which was difficult when he was showing us the Romanesque clothes on a piece from circa 1-3 century AD Pakistan/Afghanistan since I am the creator of the most definitive thing on the youtube regarding the Kushan empire). Made friends with the other guy on the tour, he is an older Irish guy who lives in New Mexico and travels all around the world. He'll also be in India next month, so we exchanged emails and might meet up over there. Woulda preferred him to be an attractive young woman, but making new friends is always a good thing
in addition to the usual stuff at the museums, they just opened an exhibit 'bout divination in the Safavid and Ottoman empires. Granted prognostication is pretty much the complete opposite of everything that makes mideavel Islam my favorite era, but the Psychic Friends Network is always good for a laugh. Any good pseudoscience needs to be rooted in legit-sounding jargon, and these guys used the Bible and Koran and the zodiac and Alexander the Great and Hippocrates
anywhoo . . . the exhibit was pretty cool and I wound up buying a coffee table book

no doubt my people in Europe are cool too, but the only fam I really know are the 'Merican ones |
