- APK (Aerosol Pilot Kings), USA
Writing since 98, Icon-5 started at his early Graffiti years in the West Side of San Antonio, Texas, in United States. During his High School years, Icon gathered his motivation from his cousin Blis, who was also in the same school. Starting off sketchbooks, then small tags, then a couple of burners around the neighborhood, Blis’s talent earned him a street rep., at school, and quickly became the cool cat to be around. It was the perfect motivation for Icon to start doing Graffiti. Following Blis’s steps, Icon learned the basics of Graffiti and was introduced to local street taggers, and neighborhood gangsters. Icon’s initial name was “TEK-one,” in which he got to do his first burner. Realizing that “TEK-one” was the most common name to have, Icon found his name, along with his boy Deps (Deper at the time). Deps was earlier introduced by his cousin Blis, and they both were in a crew called RBK. The members of RBK were Ceos (Shock at the time), Deps, Serv, and a few others. Eventually Icon worked his way into the crew as well. RBK became really close with Mesh (one of the San Antonio Graffiti legends), who was already doing Graffiti for years. Mesh had a hearshop/Graff store, in which RBK would go in, and kick it. Definitely Mesh’s shop (down Presa Rd.) was the place to chill. Mesh showed the young RBK crew the politics and risks in the Graffiti culture. Sooner then later, RBK was already painting freights with MESH and other boys. At that point, Graffiti was no longer a way to be popular; Graffiti became their life. Icon eventually started hearing about a cat name Kaos. His unique style got him a reputation all around the City of San Antonio. Eventually the entire RBK got the honor meet Kaos and his crew APK. The members of APK crew were Kaos, Galic, and Kasper. According to Icon, APK were some down the earth cats, so they clicked right away. Icon was flattered to even meet these people, because they were the cats that he looked up to as a Graffiti amateur. At the time, Kaos wanted to start a crew called FGO, which now stands for “Fat Girls Only.” It was uncertain why Kaos came out with this name, but it sure was a funny crew name to have. Eventually, Kaos asked the entire RBK crew to be in FGO. The cats in RBK didn’t hesitate at all, and that’s how the FGO crew got started. Later then, Icon also worked his way into the APK crew as well. Everybody has been representing these crews till this date, and the members and works have gone as far as South Korea, Alaska, NYC, California, and many other places.
Icon has also showed a great interest for B-boying. Icon and his cousin Blis would watch underground B-boy footages that set the spark that made them look into this dance style more. A couple of years later, a B-boy with the name of Daniel (now in Jive Turkeys b-boy crew), who also went to the same High School, told them about YA (Youth Advocates); an organization that promoted artistic activities and gave a space for B-boys to come out and dance. The purpose of this was to keep young kids off the streets and out of trouble. YA was ran by Robert Trevino (in San Antonio), and Charles Rotramel (in Houston). YA has been the ramp to many famous B-boys and crews today. HaviKoro, United Bboys, Jive Turkeys, Alien Squad, and many more where part of this project, in which they would serve the community by doing performances, fieldtrips, and B-boy competitions.
After a couple of years Icon moved to the City of Dallas, where he met B-boy Ronin (a Korean exchange student at SMU). They both were introduced by b-boy Jin, from Jive Turkeys. Icon was amazed to see all the energy and optimism in such cat. Ronin was always down and ready to make things happen. Icon and Ronin clicked from the 1st moment, and they have been homeboys ever since. Back in Korea, Ronin’s been friends with Mc. Sniper, and the T.I.P crew. Mc. Sniper is the top Mc in Korea, and has gone as far a Mexico. T.I.P is one of the top B-boy crews in Korea and the world, and has successfully set a new trend of B-boying by winning the 2007 U.K B-boy Championships. T.I.P has achieved great recognition in Battle of the Year, B-boy Unit, and many more. T.I.P has also gone as far as NYC, LA, Las Vegas, Canada, France, Sweden, China, UK, Japan, and many other places. Ronin’s return to Korea established a solid business and personal relationship with both T.I.P and Mc. Sniper. Looking to branch out to the American market, T.I.P got Icon into the crew, where they both have been working in many international projects. Now with Icon in T.I.P crew, “Teamwork Is Perfect” is the first crew in Korea to have an active Graffiti Artist. Also, Icon has worked in projects, independently, with Mc. Sniper as well.
