The wink and smile on each front cover, a graphic representation of the magazines logo have become integral to the i-D identity; obvious yet understated, an icon in the world of fashion and media. Our winking cover stars have included Madonna, Tom Ford, Chloe Sevigny, Bjork,Tilda Swinton, Drew Barrymore, Lil Kim, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.
Launched in 1980, i-D has built a reputation for being a consistent source of inspiration for all involved in fashion culture. i-D began as a fanzine dedicated to the street style of punk-era London in 1980 and soon became essential reading for the fashion-aware. i-D has now developed into a glossy magazine that documents fashion and contemporary culture, and has gone a long way toward defining it. i-D constantly reinvents itself and continues to encourage creativity, which is why after over 25 years its editorial content still manages to surprise and inspire. horse hair

i-D deals in ideas and creativity in its pages. i-D features people in fashion, music, art, clubs, film and every creative field. i-D picks up on talent before anyone else: Wolfgang Tillmans, Nick Knight, Dylan Jones, Juergen Teller, Caryn Franklin and Craig McDean all started their careers here. Madonna, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Kanye West,Helmut Lang, Franz Ferdinand, Chloe Sevigny, Raf Simons,Undercover, Veronique Branquinho, Lily Cole, Giles Deacon,Dizzee Rascal, Scarlett Johansson, Rick Owens and Tadanobu Asano are amongst those who appeared first in i-D. what else do we do? i-Ds influence was recognised in 2001 with the publicationby Taschen of Smile i-D: Fashion And Style, The Best From 20 Years Of i-D, a 600-page retrospective book which was sold internationally. This was followed in 2002 by Fashion Now, an anthology of contemporary designers edited by thei-D team and published by Taschen in seven languages. i-D has also held numerous exhibitions worldwide; venues have included the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs at the Louvre inParis, the Art Directors Club in New York, the Armani flagship store in Milan, Spiral Hall in Tokyo and Colette in Paris. i-Ds website was established in 2000 and currently receives over 3 million hits each month, reinforcing the magazines spirit and ethos internationally.

The first 13 issues of i-D Magazine. First published in 1980. Just 40 pages, stuck together with three rickety staples, it had it's own manifesto: 'i-D is a Fashion/Style Magazine. Style isn't what but how you wear clothes. Fashion is the way you walk, talk, dance and prance. Through i-D ideas travel very fast and free from the mainstream - so join us on the run!'
