Né à Casablanca au Maroc, Idriss El Mehdi ne s’est jamais détaché du Jazz et des notes de son piano que pour explorer la tradition musicale de son enfance à travers le Guembri, basse africaine des maîtres Gnawas. Armé de son piano et nourri des plus riches collaborations en France (Calogero, Jho Archer, Luz Casal, Théophilo Chantre, Garry Christian, Axel Bauer, Christophe, Bruno Maman, Michel Delpech…), Idriss El Mehdi a sillonné les scènes du jazz oriental, de la pop et du rock avant de créer au Guembri, et au carrefour de toutes ses influences, une musique inédite et passionnée. Après avoir autoproduit et réalisé en 2008 un premier EP en français « On Cherche un Chemin », il choisit de donner une dimension internationale à son projet, crée le « Bladi Band » et se rapproche de la langue anglaise. Idriss El Mehdi et son « Melting-Pop » évoquent la nouvelle génération métisse : sa parole forte, simple et engagée bercée de pop, de rock, de jazz et d’afrobeat-gnawa est une pensée universelle ouverte à toutes les générations et tous les pays …

Born in Casablanca in Morroco Idriss El Mehdi has never looked away from Jazz music and his piano’s notes only to explore the musical tradition of his childhood through the Guembri, african bass from the Gnawa masters’ heritage. With his piano and strong off the richest colaborations in France (Calogero, Jho Archer, Luz Casal, Théophilo Chantre, Garry Christian, Axel Bauer, Christophe, Bruno Maman, Michel Delpech…), Idriss El Mehdi has travelled around oriental jazz, rock and pop music before he started composing with the Guembri. At the cross road of all thoose ethnic influences, an unic and passionated style of music was born. After having autoproduced and realised his first EP in fench « On Cherche Un Chemin », Idriss El Mehdi decided to give an international view to his project, created the « Bladi Band » getting closer to english language. His « Melting-Pop » deals with the new mix-raced generation : his words are strong, simple, commited. They are influenced by pop, rock, jazz and afrobeat-gnawa and represent a universal way of mind opened to all generations and all cultures.

Ma rencontre avec le guembri a été fulgurante. J’ai tout de suite été intrigué par cet objet fait de bois et de peaux. Moi, le pianiste habitué depuis tant d’années à avoir à ma disposition 88 notes de musiques pour m’exprimer, je me trouvais face à 3 simples cordes faites de boyaux de chèvres. Et dans ces cordes, toute l’histoire de la musique, depuis sa création, demeurait. Ma fascination allait laisser place à une réelle passion. J’entrepris, timidement d’abord, un lent travail d’apprentissage de l’instrument. Mes quelques séjours à Essaouira auprès du Mâalem Mahmoud Guania me donnèrent un aperçu des techniques utilisées. Mais plus que cela, c’est bien l’âme profonde de la musique Gnaoua qui, à mon insu, allait s’infiltrait peu à peu dans mon cœur. Chaque retour à Paris me voyait encore plus déterminé à apprivoiser le guembri. Chaque jour je posais une pierre de plus sur la compréhension de cet instrument et de cette musique. Je travaillais patiemment et développait ma technique en me souvenant de ce que j’avais vu et entendu là-bas au pays. Vint ensuite le moment où il me fallait allier le son de ma voix aux formes traditionnelles. J’apprenais alors les chants gnaouas et joignait enfin méthodiquement le geste à la parole. Le processus fut long mais chaque jour je pouvais constater, avec fierté et sérénité, mes progrès. Enfin mon instinct de compositeur se réveillait et je composais un soir ma première chanson avec le guembri. Comme j’imaginais un mélange des rythmes marocains et brésiliens, je l’appelais « Guembaia », et demandait à mon ami Téophilo Chantre de m’inventer un texte en portugais. Ce qu’il fit avec talent, répondant à mon voeux d’avoir un texte simple se rapprochant de l’esprit des chants gnaouis et qui ferait un lien entre le rituel de transe Gnaoua et celui de la Macumba brésilienne. Les autres compositions allaient suivre bientôt m’indiquant une voie que personne ne devait avoir exploré encore avec le guembri. Cette voie se dessinait de plus en plus au fur et à mesure que mes goûts musicaux se précisaient. Vivant en France, je me familiarisais aussi à l’idée de chanter en français avant de naturellement me tourner vers l’anglais. Moi qui étais destiné à devenir un pianiste de Jazz, j’étais en train d’inventer un son nouveau. Aujourd’hui je sais que le travail que j’ai engagé il y a plusieurs années est arrivé à maturité. Et ce que j’imaginais alors, un son pop-folk-guembri, une musique encore inédite avec le guembri, avait finalement pris forme à force de patience et de détermination. C’est le fruit de ce voyage passionnel que je vous invite à partager avec moi.

My first meeting with the guembri was love at first sight. I was totally amazed by this object made out of wood & skin. Me, as a pianist had always been used to having 88 notes to express myself with, and then, I suddenly found myself challenged by 3 simple chords made out of goats gut. And behind these chords all of the musical heritage was remaining. Step by step, my fascination turned into a real passion and I started working on this instrument. My several trips to Essaouira along side Maalem Mahmoud Guania allowed me to discover some of the traditional techniques. But above all, it was the deep soul of Gnawa music that captivated my heart. Upon every return to Paris, I found myself more & more determined to master the Guembri. Every passing day allowed me to build my understanding and appreciation of this instrumen. I worked hard to develop my own technique inspired by the exposure I had seen & heard back in my homeland. To follow, was to add the sound of my voice in a traditional form. I learned Gnawa songs adding the final touch - to play with lyrics. The process was long, but I could proudly see my progress with serenity. At last, my instinct as a composer blossomed when one night, I sucessfully composed my first song on the Guembri. As I imagined a mixture of marocan & brazilian rythms, that I named « Guembaia », I asked my friend Teophilo Chantre to write a text in portuguese. He made my wish come true when he achieved my ambition to have simple lyrics that were close to Gnawas songs creating a link with the traditional ritual of Gnawa transe & Brazilan Macumba. Other compositions quickly followed and allowed me to create a niche that nobody had yet explored. This journey carved its path & my musical style defined itself more & more. I was living in France and getting used to singing in french language, always bearing in mind that I would eventually go naturally to english. Me, who was due to become a jazz pianist was inventing a new sound. Today, I appreciate that my work has paid off over several years. What I now define as a pop-folk-guembri sound, which is kind of unique back home, has now taken shape thanks to my patience & determination. This has become the fruit of a passionate voyage that I warmly invite you to share with me.
