Show spotlights High Desert
Area news hits airwaves via Victorvillebased broadcast
VICTORVILLE — Garrett Law knows that name recognition is everything in broadcast news.
“If you look at the Anaheim Angels, it was more lucrative for them to say they were from L.A.,” he said. “It’s the same with L.A. television stations, covering L.A. news.”
But, Los Angeles news crews have had a habit of only paying attention to the High Desert when something bad happens, continued Law, general manager of Victorville-based KHIZ-TV. Demand has grown for news closer to home.
“Since I started here at the station,” said Law, “one of the recurring comments I’ve gotten from viewers, businesses and advertisers is: ‘Why isn’t anyone covering the news of the Inland Empire and High Desert?’ ”
Convinced that a regional news program could prove profitable, Law set out about six months ago to produce a news block that wouldn’t fail to “show the good things in the community.”
In October, KHIZ-TV launched “IE Live! on KHIZ,” the only original, daily newscast based in the High Desert. The 30-minute program, co-hosted by anchor Raychel Vendetti and meteorologist Ray Petelin, airs live weekdays at 7 a.m. and is re-broadcast at 7 p.m.
“IE Live!” covers news, features, weather, sports, entertainment, traffic updates and even surf reports, while not forgetting that many viewers are just as interested in what’s happening in Los Angeles.

KHIZ-TV reaches an estimated 2.5 million viewers regionally via cable and over the air, and on Los Angeles-market DirecTV and Dish Network channels.
Vendetti, who started her television reporting career at WSEE-TV in Erie, Penn., says she feels a sense of awe at the region’s often-sudden changes in weather. She is equally impressed by the number of people who call the Inland Empire and High Desert their homes.
“The news we’re covering affects so many,” she said. “People here are like anywhere else. They want to know what’s happening in their world.”
Aside from Vendetti and Petelin, the “IE Live!” staff includes one field reporter, two camera operators, one video producer, one graphic artist and a promotions director.
In addition, film footage, photos and story ideas from viewers are accepted.
If “IE Live!” garners enough public support, Law will begin production on a second live news program for the evening.
“There’s definitely a sense of community up here … but it’s harder to find because it hasn’t been trumpeted every day by local T.V. news,” he said.
