Review of If Man Is Five's Blood Is The Ink Hate Is The Story:
A mix of punk, metal, hardcore and classical, their second album is energetic, entertaining and eclectic. One things's for certain: nobody's gonna be taking a nap during Blood is the Ink. Singer Angela Timon and her bandmates have put their all into 12 tow-curling, heart-twitching tunes, and its not an effort that can go by unnoticed. Unabashedly theatrical, the album works well as a collective performance; of course, this play is a tragedy. Giving new meaning to the phrase rock opera, "The Aria" showcases Timon's stirring soprano, with lyrics sung in Italian to boot. "Wicked Trick" is an over-the-top paean to someone's dear, departed brother(guitarist-Salazar's) so dramatic it's hard to tell whether it's based in reality or just the product of an active imagination. After a dozen such diverse tracks, the final curtain falls on "Body Count," a regretful morning-after song in the grand tradition of Liz phair's "Fuck and Run" -- only angrier, naturally.
