Who I'd like to meet:
IFP/Chicago has some great events coming up in February!
Independent Spirit Awards Viewing Party!
February 21, 2009 - 3:30 PM - Awards start at 4:00 PM
Location TBD SOON
FREE for IFP members; $15 for all others
RSVP to chicago@ifp.org
Please join us for our annual Spirit Awards Viewing Party! We have been doing this for years and it's always a great time. Have some food, have some drinks, and hang out with the cool kids while we celebrate independent film in 2008.
This will also be a great opportunity to meet our brand new Executive Director Ryan Jewell! He can't wait to meet you, you wouldn't want to disappoint him, would you?
A Little About the Awards
Founded in 1984, the awards were originally known as the FINDIE ("Friends of Independents") Awards. In 1986, the awards were renamed the Independent Spirit Awards. It was also the first time our membership voted on the winners.
Over the past 22 years, Film Independent's Spirit Awards has grown into a vanguard event. Held as a luncheon on the beach in Santa Monica, the Awards ceremony brings together the entire film community to celebrate the best of independent film.
In 2005, the producing organization of the Spirit Awards changed its name from IFP/Los Angeles to Film Independent. Although the name has changed, the show, the organization, and mission remain the same.
Stay tuned! We'll be announcing our venue very, very soon.

Meet the Filmmaker Screening: An American Opera
by Tom McPhee
Wednesday, February 18- 7PM
Facets
1517 W. Fullerton
FREE for IFP and NATAS members; $5 for all others
Feature Documentary with a Q & A with the director to follow
Tom McPhee is taking this film on an 80 city library tour and has a ton of great ideas about self distribution. Join us for a discussion of this important topic for all filmmakers working today as well as discussion of the film!
AN AMERICAN OPERA is a visceral, operatic vision of what happened to the pet owners of New Orleans who were forced to evacuate after Hurricane Katrina without their beloved pets and the volunteers who came from all over the world to help.
America suffered its worst domestic animal crisis in history when tens of thousands of animals were left to perish in neighborhoods all across the gulf.
Follow the heartfelt story, magically crafted by Director Tom McPhee, of the pets, vets, owners, officials, rescuers and adopters of animals as they work through the chaos to do what is right only to discover not everyone is working toward the same goal!
An American Opera details the efforts of thousands of volunteers who saved the lives of thousands of house pets immediately following Hurricane Katrina. I’ve personally documented the success and strife of what’s been called “The Greatest Pet Rescue Ever!”
An American Opera has won five awards from these festivals: The 40th Houston Worldfest, 40th U.S. International Film Festival, Sacramento Film & Music Festival, ReelHeART International Film Festival in Toronto, and the Park City Film & Music Festival. 3 first place/Gold and 2 third place/Bronze. In all, An American Opera screened as part of 24 film festivals on 4 continents.
About Tom McPhee & Man Smiling Moving Pictures
