About me:
Detroit Michigan is Home to the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum
Come and experience audio biographies and excerpts of more than ninety International Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductees, including: Shirley Caesar, Albertina Walker, The Caravans, Inez Andrews, Gospel Music Workshop of America Founder James Cleveland, Yolanda Adams and Richard Smallwood.
Enjoy video footage of recording sessions featuring gospel greats such as Willie Neal Johnson, as well as the historical Bill Gaither and Ed Smith 1994 video recording. If time permits, take a few minutes to make your own recording, or simply listen to Rance Allen’s “You Make Me Want To Dance” or hum along to “Precious Lord”.
Located only a few minutes from the historic Motown Museum, the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to the preservation, education and furtherance of gospel music. Each year, up to ten new gospel notables are inducted into the Hall of Fame. Candidates are selected based upon their contributions to the advancement of gospel music as a performer, song writer, producer, radio personality or musician. Winners are inducted during the annual International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Induction and Awards Celebration, held the fourth Saturday of October each year.
The Gospel Music Hall of Fame & Museum opened in Detroit, Michigan, in March 1995. The goal of its founding visionaries included:
Immortalizing the achievements and preserving the memories of those who have made significant contributions to the furtherance of gospel music.
Establishing a depository of gospel music annals and creating a special place where young and old alike come to share, learn, experience and enjoy one of their most valued legacies – Gospel Music.
In October 2003, exactly seven years after its inception, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum went global, officially changing its name to the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum. This repositioning represents an expanded vision that includes and reflects the history of gospel music in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia, Jamaica and various islands in the Caribbean. Amid an ever-shrinking global society, such a prophetic undertaking has given life to the archiving of the world’s history of gospel music.
Born of Negro spirituals, the blues and tabernacle songs, gospel music has its origins in the mid 1800’s. Through Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey, the Father of Gospel Music, humbly gives much credit to composer C.A. Tindley, many others have contributed to this great art form, and the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum is the place to learn.
A visit to the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum will prompt the patting of your feet, the clapping of your hands and even an “Amen” or two. Come and learn of
Dr. Thomas A Dorsey, read original compositions of gospel’s pioneers and browse the “Wall of Time” – a visual exhibition of Gospel Music from 1865 to present. This all inclusive undertaking not only acknowledges the worldwide appeal and love for gospel music, but also creates a venue for documenting international works and performances of so many of gospel greats – Mahalia Jackson, the Fisk Jubilee Singers and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
To share in this mission to preserve the history of gospel, forward all tax deductible contributions to the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum. To donate recordings and /or printed media, contact David Gough (313) 592-0017.
