SOCIAL PROGRAMME ....

Orientation Day ....

Monday January 19....

3.45 Reception....

A walking tour of the city, through St Stephens Green, Grafton St, Trinity College, O’Connell St, Henry St, the Market and Dublin Bus. This is a very good introduction to the city and a comfortable way to introduce yourself to the other students.....

Tuesday January 20....

St Patricks Cathedral ....

Reception 2.15....

One of Dublin's three cathedrals, St. Patrick's is actually the "National Cathedral", lacking the main ingredient that makes a cathedral out of a church - a bishop! Here St. Patrick supposedly baptized the first local converts besides a "Holy Well". Being the largest church in Ireland, St. Patrick's is well worth a visit, though a bit of a walk from Dublin's city center. But for friends of world literature this is a pilgrimage and a must, Jonathan Swift of "Gulliver" fame was dean of and is buried in the cathedral.....

Wednesday January 21....

Pub Night ....

Meet @ Trinity College @ 8.30 ....

Wednesday night is our social night out. We usually go to one of the traditional pubs in the city centre to listen to some local music and indulge in the finest of beverages. Sometimes we sing our hearts out at Karaoke , sometimes we dance, sometimes we get a little tipsy but we always have lots of fun. This is the best way to meet new friends, speak English in a relaxed atmosphere and get a taste of Irish culture. Come along, everybody is welcome! ................

My Left Foot ....

In This true story told through flashbacks, Christy Brown is born with crippling cerebral palsy into a poor, working-class Irish family. Able only to control movement in his left foot and to speak in guttural sounds, he is mistakenly believed to be retarded for the first ten years of his life.
Later, through the help of h

Tuesday November 18t

Dun Laoghaire Reception 2.15

Boasting one of the worlds finest harbours, Dún Laoghaire takes it's name form the great King Laoire who in 480A.D. maintained a great "Dún" or stone fort in the centre of the town. The ancient fort was demolished in 1803 to make way for the building of a Martello tower which in turn was replaced in 1834 by the first suburban railway in the world. King Laoire's large garrison ensured that the Romans would think twice about invading Ireland from British shores. Some say that Patrick the boy shepherd arrived at Dún Laoghaire as a slave, it was the same Patrick who returned in 432A.D. to face King Laoghaire and who subsequently destroyed his ancient Druid order. Traces of this order can still be found in Dún Laoghaire and the neighbouring village of Dalkey. Both towns are closely linked for it was the granite from Dalkey Hill that built Dún Laoghaire harbour in 1817.....
