   About Ilkeston Folk Club
Welcome one and all to the Ilkeston Folk Club MySpace Site - Born out of the famous White Cow Folk Club, the Ilkeston Folk Club is an established and friendly club always keen to see new faces and encourage new performers - Meetings are held every Wednesday at The Stute (The Institute - home of Ilkeston Rugby Club, Hallam Fields in Ilkeston) kicking off around 8.30pm. Please follow the link to the Official Website for directions - We have performances or open mic nights rather than the popular sing around style found at many clubs, giving everyone the opportunity to do something, be it folk singing, contemporary music or something else. Although we call ourselves a folk club we enjoy many styles of music: a typical night might include traditional & modern folk music, blues, country music, poetry, in fact just about anything and everything. We believe that folk music is more about folk making music than the subject matter or style - We have our own room for club nights with comfortable seating, with a well stocked bar and toilet facilities. It is on the first floor with access via a flight of wide, easy to negotiate stairs, if you have difficulty with stairs please contact us and we will provide as much help as we possibly can - We provide a simple set up of a six channel P.A. with three microphones, but the room is equally good for singing and playing unplugged - We appreciate performers of all standards and abilities and if you don't want to perform just come and listen, but be warned many a non performer has been bitten by the folkie bug and ended up singing along or even learning to play

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

(Hi: enjoyed my visit.)

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
